Apricot flavouring
A Beer Cloaked in Secrecy An ale whose mysterious and unusual palate will swirl across your tongue and ask more questions than it answers. A beer brewed clandestinely and given a name whose meaning is never revealed. Why #9? Why, indeed. A sort of dry, crisp, fruity, refreshing, not-quite pale ale. #9 is really impossible to describe because theres never been anything else quite like it. Fermented with our 150 year old strain of top-fermenting English yeast.

Filter-bright golden orange with avg head. Dried apricot and bread crust aroma - like some toast with apricot ham. Slightly creamy, too-thick body. Comes across as a little starchy/pasty. Sort of a "good" version of Pyramids Apricot Ale - if such a thing exists.

Thick white head, which slowly diminishes, weak hoppy aroma. Very strong wheat taste, with a light wheat aftertaste

UPDATED: DEC 5, 2005 Pours golden/straw color with smallish white head, mostly diminishing. The aroma is banana and vegetal malt. The flavor is wheat and metal. Thin and matery mouthfeel.

I used to think that I really liked this beer. Every once in a while, Ill try it and not mind it so much. For the most part, Im not a fan. Very weak bodied and flavored. I feel that the apricot flavor mixed with something else in the beer comes off tasting like mild barf. Yes, thats really what I taste. Its not strong but very present.

UPDATED: AUG 23, 2012 6 pack from Beer Store of all places. Well, I have come a long way. Drank a 6 pack in apparently better shape than 7 years ago! Aroma still mild - some hops and citrus. Colour the same. taste though is fine - light ale, citrus overtones, some hops. A perfectly fine session chugger. Originally 5/3/2/3/6 . Bottle from a Magic Hat sampler 12-pack split with blankboy, HogTownHarry and GregClow. Dark orange, slight white head. Odd aroma - stale hops, sweetness, a hint of a carbonated fruit beverage, citrus - very odd. Thin mouthfeel, but pleasantly frothy and active on the tongue. Flavour - yeck! Cream Soda! That is the dominant flavour here, it took me a bit to identify it, because it has been years since I have had it - I hate Cream Soda! Lingering sweetness. Terribly unbalanced, by the end I truly despised this beer, a strong reaction that I usually dont have one way or another to a beer.

Bottle from a Magic Hat sampler 12-pack split with blankboy, HogTownHarry and tupalev. Clear orange-amber with a small head. Aroma like lemon drops mixed with hair dye - weird, but actually sort of appealing. Body is fizzy. Mild flavour, with some notes of orange, apricot and sweet malt. A really strange beer.

Bottle shared with HogTownHarry, GregClow & tupalev. Pours a clear dark orange with a spare white head. Aroma of citrus, fruity malt and hairdye (thanks GregClow). Hairdye? "Magic Hat says "#9 is really impossible to describe because theres never been anything else quite like it." -- after that crazy aroma I believe it. Flavour of cream soda (thanks tupalev), bubble gum, malt, cherries and more. Wacky! This is one of the most unique and strangest beers Ive had but it doesnt quite work -- though I must say I liked it the most out of those of us who got together for a tasting. Im so intrigued by this beer I look forward to trying it again.

Bottle (12oz). Shared with blankboy, GregClow and tupalev - out of 2005 Magic Hat 12-pack. Poured clear light copper with a thin wispy white head. Aroma of vegetal malt, a tad uriney, with notes of wet newspaper-wrapped dog and very slight stale hops. Taste hit me immediately of microwave "buttered" popcorn, which was weird to say the least. Flat and thin mouthfeel. As I finished my sample I decided that overall I didnt loathe it as much in toto as each of the parts would lead me to think.

(12 oz bottle: Chevy Chase Wine & Spirits in Washington, DC) Very fruity pale ale that tastes like apricots, or perhaps a bit of peach. Otherwise, its a fairly basic beer with a very mild hops bitterness that is also unexpectedly nutty and slightly caramely. Solid apricot aroma, and thats about it. Light-medium body, gently carbonated and kind of slick on the palate. Slightly hazy and light amber in color. Half an inch of off-white head quickly settles to a thin film, and then eventually to a small ring, leaving spots and streaks of lace here and there on the glass. Not bad, but certainly not tasty enough for me to buy this again.

Had on tap. Pretty nice stuff. Very smooth, a bit spicy. Seemed light, but not watery or anything. Coulda drank like 5 of these in 10 minutes. Bit of a sweet aftertaste.
