Apricot flavouring
A Beer Cloaked in Secrecy An ale whose mysterious and unusual palate will swirl across your tongue and ask more questions than it answers. A beer brewed clandestinely and given a name whose meaning is never revealed. Why #9? Why, indeed. A sort of dry, crisp, fruity, refreshing, not-quite pale ale. #9 is really impossible to describe because there’s never been anything else quite like it. Fermented with our 150 year old strain of top-fermenting English yeast.

i had only heard of this beer, living on the west coast. i was eager to try it when i went to boston. surprisingly many bars/pubs have it on draft. poured light golden brown with little to no head. nose of musty fruits of apricots and apples. mouth pushes the same with a week backbone of maltor wheat and flat hops. thin and weak. what a horrible beer and disapointment. why the hell do they sell this crap? engine engine #9, you suck bro!

Weirdly fruity too hoppy palealish concoction. Not impressed. It seems as gimmicky as Magic Hat’s truly annoying and unnavigable website.

Thin white head dissipates quickly. Cloudy orange color. Dry, fruity taste with a sweet aftertaste on the palate. Creamy and full, though it feels like it should more like a wheat beer. Fun to drink.

Filter-bright golden orange with avg head. Dried apricot and bread crust aroma - like some toast with apricot ham. Slightly creamy, too-thick body. Comes across as a little starchy/pasty. Sort of a "good" version of Pyramid’s Apricot Ale - if such a thing exists.

Thick white head, which slowly diminishes, weak hoppy aroma. Very strong wheat taste, with a light wheat aftertaste

UPDATED: DEC 5, 2005 Pours golden/straw color with smallish white head, mostly diminishing. The aroma is banana and vegetal malt. The flavor is wheat and metal. Thin and matery mouthfeel.

I used to think that I really liked this beer. Every once in a while, I’ll try it and not mind it so much. For the most part, I’m not a fan. Very weak bodied and flavored. I feel that the apricot flavor mixed with something else in the beer comes off tasting like mild barf. Yes, that’s really what I taste. It’s not strong but very present.

UPDATED: AUG 23, 2012 6 pack from Beer Store of all places. Well, I have come a long way. Drank a 6 pack in apparently better shape than 7 years ago! Aroma still mild - some hops and citrus. Colour the same. taste though is fine - light ale, citrus overtones, some hops. A perfectly fine session chugger. Originally 5/3/2/3/6 . Bottle from a Magic Hat sampler 12-pack split with blankboy, HogTownHarry and GregClow. Dark orange, slight white head. Odd aroma - stale hops, sweetness, a hint of a carbonated fruit beverage, citrus - very odd. Thin mouthfeel, but pleasantly frothy and active on the tongue. Flavour - yeck! Cream Soda! That is the dominant flavour here, it took me a bit to identify it, because it has been years since I have had it - I hate Cream Soda! Lingering sweetness. Terribly unbalanced, by the end I truly despised this beer, a strong reaction that I usually don’t have one way or another to a beer.

Bottle from a Magic Hat sampler 12-pack split with blankboy, HogTownHarry and tupalev. Clear orange-amber with a small head. Aroma like lemon drops mixed with hair dye - weird, but actually sort of appealing. Body is fizzy. Mild flavour, with some notes of orange, apricot and sweet malt. A really strange beer.

Bottle shared with HogTownHarry, GregClow & tupalev. Pours a clear dark orange with a spare white head. Aroma of citrus, fruity malt and hairdye (thanks GregClow). Hairdye? "Magic Hat’ says "#9 is really impossible to describe because there’s never been anything else quite like it." -- after that crazy aroma I believe it. Flavour of cream soda (thanks tupalev), bubble gum, malt, cherries and more. Wacky! This is one of the most unique and strangest beers I’ve had but it doesn’t quite work -- though I must say I liked it the most out of those of us who got together for a tasting. I’m so intrigued by this beer I look forward to trying it again.
