UPDATED: MAR 21, 2011 Extremely piney citrus nose, almost like pinesol cleaner. Flavor has a citric bite, with underlying earthiness and hint of smoke. Dunno, maybe I was just in the mood for an ipa, but this was fantastic to me...
Tried it again. Aroma is even better than I remembered. good earthy grounding. This is probably the best magic hat beer I’ve had... robiannelli (591) - West Deptford, New Jersey, USA - MAR 5, 2011
12oz bottle pours black with dark khaki head. Aromas of roasty malt hop resin and chocolate upfront, some piney citrus rine in backround. Taste is bitter but flavorfull. Body is full and creamy very palatable. Finish leaves you with a chocolate milk feel similer to a guinness maybe thats why i like this so much Tessic (1152) - Brantford, Ontario, CANADA - JUL 11, 2012
This IPA poured a deep black colour with a big, light brown, creamy head. To the nose there are scents of cocoa, clight coffee, vanilla, caramel and light grass. First sip was very roasty on the palate with additional flavours of toast and coffee along with cocoa. Finish was deep roasted coffee flavour and the palate was burnt. Delicious! ellolovey (483) - Georgia, USA - SEP 27, 2012
Pours a dark brown with a frothy mocha colored head. Aroma of sweet caramel and roasted malts. Hints of cocoa and coffee mixed with the roasted malt taste. Not as sweet as aroma leads on. Bitter taste of resin hops and cocoa. Nice carbonation. Medium body and very easy to drink.

355ml bottle. Pours a lovely off white head, kind of soda looks, but the latte foam reveals the beer attitude. Chocolate aroma with an oaky feeling. Taste of chocolate, bark and coffee. Good choice.

Serve this one very chilled. Comes dark with a great forming head. Chocolate malt taste. Good overall. Johnroy (39) - Ringwood, New Jersey, USA - MAR 6, 2011
Pours black, with yellowish head. Thoughtis it would taste heavy. It does not. Light taste with a porterish style yet a different aftertase than a porter. Good beer. They should realease as a six pack! BavariaYeti (14) - Wiesenbronn, GERMANY - MAR 9, 2011
I was intrigued by this, a black IPA. Tastes like a hoppy porter to me. I think it’s a fine variety and a pretty cool style. I thought the palate was a bit thin, but maybe because I’m kind of comparing it to a porter. I like it and will buy again. Prost! rampmaster (642) - Alden, New York, USA - MAR 20, 2011
Presentation: It was poured from a brown 12oz bottle into a Pint glass. ("3/4 Pint of Ale" as they say on the label.) The label has a freshness date of "May 31 2011" and the abv is listed at 6%.
Appearance: It has a very dark look in the glass with some very deep dark garnet colored highlights showing through the beer. I also noticed some fine sediment hanging in suspension within the body. To cap off this beer I got a dense tan head which stands two fingers tall. This head has excellent retention and coats the glass with lacing.
Smell: I get a dark roasted malt character with hints of coffee and caramel. Hops are lighter than the malt and add some citrus and herbal notes to the nose.
Taste/Palate: The palate opens up with mild sweetness, roasted malt, coffee and toasted bread with citrus hop notes quickly moving in. It finishes with pleasant herbal/leafy hop bitterness fading slowly off the tongue. It has a creamy and smooth mouth feel with pleasant soft carbonation.
Notes: It come off more as a Porter than IPA but is still very tasty and beautiful.
