Dark brown body with a thinnish, one centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of funky malt, raisins, oak, mushrooms and meat with a very small amount of hops - not pleasant at all. Light-bodied; Assertive roasty malt flavours at first with some raisins and a thin roasty coffee flavour too. Aftertaste shows a little bit of hops, some light malt, some nuts and not much else - very mild and not much flavours. Overall, a pretty mild beer with not much going on here except for a roasty malt note and a touch of light hops. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Wegman’s in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania on 22-July-2011 sampled at home in Washington on 07-August-2011.

Surprisingly, not bad for a MagicHat, as I’m not a fan of most of their brews. This one pours dark with minimal head. Bit of a caramel toasty hoppy nose. Some malt and a bit of earth. Mouth is watery and sweet mocha ending toasty bitter. A bit more hopped porter than IPA.

Cold bottle to pint is near black with very minimal head and trace on glass. Cherry cordial over roasty backbone. Taste following suit ending rather abrupt and shy on the hops. Not disagreeable but short on complexity and breadth.

12 oz bottle from Total Wine and More in Western Henrico. The Black IPA poured a deep opaque black with a tan frothy head. The aroma was of roasted malt. The ale had no typical bitterness of highly hopped ales. Chocolate and roasted malt dominate the flavors you detected. This is a disappointing IPA with an average carbonation. The finish was of bittersweet chocolate.

Pours black with small tanned head. Roasted aroma, some dark chocolate and maybe some coffee. Taste of roasted malt and chocolate. Medium bitterness. It’s an ok beer but I wouldn’t buy it again i think. It’s interesting but nothing more than that.

Svart med brunt ganska stort skum som lägger sig snabbt. Doftar choklad, kaffe, hö och banankaka. Smaken är tyvärr inte lika bra som doften, för tunn. Kaffe, mineraler, metal, choklad och övermogen frukt.

A roasty malty mess of a beer. Just not very good. Plain roasted malts come through and dominate any sort of hops. Not much complexity. Excited when I saw this. Bored now that I’m drinking it especially for the style. Not quite a drain pour but poorly executed.

Bottle. Not at all what I expected based on "Black IPA"... more like an overcarbonated brown. Not one for me to run or walk back to.
