Dark brown with tan head, smells of malt and some peat smoke. Flavor is similar, almost sweet, but nicely light and smooth. Crisp finish asks for more, but alas, this has been discontinued. GreatDane1632 (1169) - North Dakota, USA - NOV 23, 2014
Rated based on notes taken 4 Feb 2012 -- Drank while on weekend pass from OTS at Auburn. A good black lager. There are better out there, but this is solid. Funknmilla (746) - WAYNE, Pennsylvania, USA - OCT 10, 2014
Bottle....I feel a little dirty putting this in a nice beer snifter ...this is a schwarzbier? ...it pours a very dark brown , like flat coca cola...beige head is pretty flat too...it smells quite metallic...I taste some watery molasses and state smoke, a metallic taste throughout with more metal in the finish...metal metal metal lol......rating from 3-8-2010

Backlog rating on 8-27-2012. This beer has a medium sized beige head that mostly diminishes, reddish brown transparent body, and very fast rising carbonation. The aroma is malt and chocolate. The flavor is roasted malt and sweet. The mouthfeel is smooth, watery and thin. This beer is light bodied. Overall, this beer is easy to drink due to its watery texture. There is not enough going on with this beer for me to want it again. tectactoe (3125) - Michigan, USA - JUL 15, 2014
UPDATED: NOV 12, 2014 Bottle: Deep brown, edging towards black in the center but never really getting there. SCHWARZbier? Come on. Lighter brown edges with a khaki colored, thin layered froth on top. Aroma has a nice bit of roasted & nearly charred malt with a strong backing of dry coffee beans, perhaps just a kiss of unsweet cacao, too. Mild earthiness. Taste is dry, full of more roasted malt, dry coffee grounds, & some light char. Back-end balances with a hint of sweetness from the malt, almost with a mild dark chocolate essence to it. Very mild hint of burnt caramel & molasses. A touch of earthy spice from the hops, I’m assuming. All in all, one of the better Magic Hat beers I’ve had. Decent. rumproasts (5427) - Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA - APR 4, 2014
bottle. deep brown with small head. big roasty malt body with some chocolate and light coffee. decent for the style. Bulk_Carrier (6065) - Vermont, USA - MAR 28, 2014
Reviewed from notes.
The appearance had a dark mahogany colored body with a tiny white head that dies fairly quickly.
The smell had coffee, and really kinda overbearing
The taste had the coffee come back with light hops, almost barely noticeable.
The palate was about a medium/heavy, not that sessionable at all, thick coffee aftertaste and finish.
Overall, this is decent for the style, however this is a "meal" beer, too heavy for me and with the low ABV, I was confused why it felt as heavy as it did. Beergeek23322 (2602) - Chester, Virginia, USA - JAN 6, 2014
11/1/2009. Bottle from a mixed seasonal box. Dark brown with a tan head. Roasted malt aromas with grain, caramel and earthy flavors. One if their better brews.
