Aroma: Nice, malty nose. Some roastiness with caramel malt underlying, very slight hop. Some buttery character.
Appearance: Dark red, clear.
Flavor: Roasty, sweetish malt flavor. A little hop, just enough to add more complexity. Some butteriness-nice. More roasty malt flavor than one would expect.
Mouthfeel: Some bitterness but balanced toward malt.
Overall: Very drinkable, the roastiness is quite pleasant and I could pound this. Wilecat (66) - Charlotte, North Carolina, USA - SEP 3, 2002

Very dark almost garnet hue, strong foamy head. Smell is not overpowered by alcohol and is a little smoky. Brew is very smooth and well-balanced with hints of spice. Enjoyable... ddenomme (57) - Mississauga, Ontario, CANADA - AUG 2, 2004
An excellent Irish-style red ale -- superb appearance and flavour. Nice hints of coffee and background earthiness. As an Ontario I promise never to touch Rickard’s Red again! Rosendale Brewmeister99 (55) - Rosendale, New York, USA - AUG 29, 2001

Bottle. This one pours a dark red with a tan head that stays around. This is a great looking beer! Smoky, hints of coffee - maybe some chocloate. I think this may be Magic Hat’s best, VTDeerHunter (50) - Vermont, USA - MAY 7, 2003
Poured out dark brownish red with a small, white head. Scented lightly of hops/malt. Maltier flavor than I expected. This has rich and creamy mouthfeel. It's malty with a light hop finish. Pretty good.
