Very dark almost garnet hue, strong foamy head. Smell is not overpowered by alcohol and is a little smoky. Brew is very smooth and well-balanced with hints of spice. Enjoyable... Rosendale Brewmeister99 (55) - Rosendale, New York, USA - AUG 29, 2001

Malty presents, A little fizzy on the tongue. Sharp club soda finish. Given as a gift in a Mixed 12 pack including #9, HiPA, and Hex. XO (52) - New Jersey, USA - JUL 31, 2005
Bottle. This one pours a dark red with a tan head that stays around. This is a great looking beer! Smoky, hints of coffee - maybe some chocloate. I think this may be Magic Hat’s best, VTDeerHunter (51) - Vermont, USA - MAY 7, 2003
Poured out dark brownish red with a small, white head. Scented lightly of hops/malt. Maltier flavor than I expected. This has rich and creamy mouthfeel. It's malty with a light hop finish. Pretty good.

Nice dark pour. Body look heavier then it actually is. Light to medium hops. Nice flavor, pretty well balanced. chandernagor (39) - Oak Park, Illinois, USA - OCT 22, 2004
Surprising dark red with an off-white head dissipating rather quickly. Earthy aroma and lively carbonation for a somewhat watery texture. Caramely, malty flavors with a nice bitter finish that lasts long enough. Thin to medium bodied. A decent pick from Magic Hat. sethatuml (38) - USA - FEB 5, 2003
VERY Irish Ale. A little too much bitterness. Tastes like the inside of a whiskey barrel. Like a boilermaker without the passing out. ddenomme (38) - Mississauga, Ontario, CANADA - AUG 2, 2004
An excellent Irish-style red ale -- superb appearance and flavour. Nice hints of coffee and background earthiness. As an Ontario I promise never to touch Rickard’s Red again! russnug (35) - Erie, Pennsylvania, USA - NOV 3, 2002
Nice creamy head that dissapated rather quickly. Somewhat of a roasted front end. Smooth middle and a light bitter finish.
