3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Been away for a few weeks, always give my liver a break at the beginning of the year. First rate of 2013, must preface this by saying I am not a fan of Magic Hat but this was gifted to me and I am intrigued, even though I was completely underwhelmed by Burnpile rendering from the Humdinger series. Corked & caged 750 to CBS snifter. Lots of pillowy yellow/white head with cloudy orange liquid. Lots of sticky white lacing hanging around, mellow nose just a bit of spice methinks. It’s a little hot right out of the gate, mid-palate is really nice lot of flavor; cardamom, mesquite honey, burnt banana. Finish is more heat and something astringent. Almost kills it for me. Mouthfeel is all over the place; full to start, medium in the middle, again really big astringent finish. Overall, this was better than expected and might be even better in a few years, still haven’t been won over by this brewery.
Dark fruit smell up front, wheat, malt, hop. Very boozy possibly wine-like. Mint. Peppercorns. Heat. Interesting. Malty but it isn’t a roast or burn or earth tone. Nice. Ratman197 (15354) - Arvada, Colorado, USA - MAY 12, 2015
750 ml corked and caged bottle poured a clear amber with a small lasting amber head. Aromas of wheat, caramel and dried fruit. Palate was medium bodied and smooth with a dry finish. Flavors of wheat, caramel and dried fruit with a smooth dry lingering dried fruit finish. j12601 (13099) - Poughkeepsie, New York, USA - FEB 7, 2015
Bottle at James’ house for the End of History tasting. Pours a clear amber with a thin white head. Soft caramel and a touch of hops on the nose. Medium bodied, sweet and malty. Slight warm alcohol, soft toffee. Long slow caramel and sweet malt into the finish. Jesterdeal (1986) - Marlton, New Jersey, USA - SEP 17, 2014
Sampled at the End of History tasting. Aroma of caramel, malt, pretzels, and peaty hops. Pours golden with a small frothy head and nice carb. Taste is malt forward with nice grassy hops, toast, and caramel. Not too sweet and not overbearing on the wheat. Nice and easy to drink. Jow (4084) - Orlando, Florida, USA - SEP 7, 2014
Bottle at End of History tasting. Golden brown pour. Tastes of brown sugar, honey, butter, pine, wheat, light fruit. Syrupy palate touch too sweet.
