Draft in a sampler at Ei8ht Ball. Pours a deep, near-opaque brown with a small tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, maybe a little smoke, dark chocolate, burnt sugar, and peat. Flavor of roasted malts, burnt toast, dark chocolate, rubber, grapefruit peel, and florals. Medium-bodied, with low carbonation and a bitter mouthfeel. Almost drinks like some sort of imperial stout-black IPA-smoked hybrid beer. I wouldn’t mind trying the barrel aged version to see if that cuts it a bit, mellows it out, balances it more. Tap sample. Poured a clear dark brown color with an average frothy tan head that mostly lasted with good to excellent lacing. Moderate to heavy roasted chocolate and alcohol aroma. Medium to heavy toasted dark chocolate malt flavor with a medium to heavy dark sweet and small alcohol bite finish of moderate duration. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. This is a solid beer.

Bottle: Dark brown to black color with a creamy brownish head. Aroma of dark fruits (plums, berries), cacao, roasted malt, dark chocolate. Flavor is fruity (dark berries, sweet cherries), raosty, dark chocolate, cacao beans, acid. Finish with burnt malt, coffee, cacao and dark chocolate bitterness. Long dry end. Pours an inky black with some clumpy, soot colored head. Nose has a lot of licorice, toast, brown sugar, malt, a little earthy, cracker. Flavor has a lot of licorice and molasses, a touch of smoke, almost a little sausage fat, malty, toast, some soy, booze, a touch of cough syrup, black pepper.
