Our first take on this most popular of modern beer styles. Lager, Munich and Cara malts create the pale colour and classic backbone, while a cavalcade of Germany’s finest Strisselspalt, Herrsbrucker and Hallertau hops deliver a refined bitterness and characteristic herbal hit. True to style we used soft water, a bottom fermenting yeast strain and extended cold maturation to deliver the style’s distinctive subtle depth. A lightness of body and spritzy carbonation make the beer dance on your palate while a big whack of aromatic Bavarian dry hopping gives this bear its ‘claws’…. PROST!

Keg at the Hanging Bat. A lightish golden colour with some head that is white. Quite tart.

[email protected] Brewdog Helsinki. (6,2% according to the notes on the board). Grainy stuff, cereals. Quite nasty, hoppy, citrusy, lots of grains as well. Different for sure. Lemony finish.

Keg at the Euston Tap, London during my boozy day of tickin’ with Ken. Pours clear gold with a fine, white foam head. Wonderful from start to finish. Delicious, with lovely lightly toasted bread, faint dough, mellow hay bitterness. Light bodied with average carbonation. Clean finish with true bread, interesting bread, faint dry dough, hints of citrus - mostly orange. Awesome lager. I could drink this all day. Here’s hoping Magic Rock cranks out a few more lagers.

Pours hazy pale blonde with fluffy white head and plenty of pineapple yeast esters on the nose. Served fairly cold, pineapple and grapefruit juicy hops, light body, touch of booze, not quite a pilsner with that pithy finish but tasty nonetheless.

Keg at Cask Pub and Kitchen, Pimlico, London. A golden coloured pour with a medium white head on top. Vague hoppy, fruity aroma. Tastes slightly hoppy, floral, fruity. Not really my thing.

Keg @ CPK. The pour’s a slightly hazy light gold color with a small eggshell white head. The nose is slightly toasty pale malts. A bit of roasted nut. Some sweet pie crust. Light summery apricot fruit. The taste is focused around the lovely creamy malts. A bit of sweet honey nut cheerios and bread. Light lemon and summer fruits on the crisp finish. Nice soft palate. Moderate carbonation. Overall, a pretty nice beer.

Smells like an ipa, prominent tropical hop smell, with a fine of treacle. A lovely colour, not highly carbonated. A intriguing taste, like a pale ale crossed with a rich larger. Creamy in the mouth but could even be a bit more fizzy. Definitely worth checking out.

On tap at CPK, London. It pours a clear golden colour with a large white head. Small bubbles and long lasting foam. Aroma if fresh cut grass, little hoppy with some peaches and pine. Taste is gently bittersweet with some grass and little grains and apricots. Mouthfeel is lift and refreshing with good carbonation. This is definitely an outstanding pilsner.

Keg at Euston tap. It pours golden with a small white head. The nose is floral, grass, dough and tropical fruit. The taste is grassy, dough, floral, faint herbal notes, crisp bitterness, soap and touch of pithy lemon with a dry, grassy finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Not my sort of thing, but well-made nonetheless.

Keg @ Hanging Bat, Edinburgh [020413]
Amber, clear, dense white bubbly head, nice lacing
Aroma - Dry hops, lots of grassy herbal bit spicy hops, dab of dry lemon zest, strange hop aroma, very grassy herbs
Taste - Dry spicy grassy herbal hops, hopped up pils, pale malt background, rather weird flavour, it’s a Marmite beer but I like it
Palate - Medium carb, light to medium body, grassy quite bitter hop but right amount of sweetness in the malt background. Finish as main flavour, fairly rapid finish, quite dry, very soft dry hop tail
Ovevrall - Very hoppy derivative of a pils, it will divide opinion. I like it. It’s my highest rate for a lager so far.

Euston Tap. Thanks to Leighton for this one. Light haze on this gold beer. Little white head. Genuine tasting lagerish malt which a lot of the hoppy lagers of recent times have lacked. On top of this is a floral and crispy lemon and a whisper of lime. Good stuff.
