COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our Black IPA fuses speciality malts with a tropical punch bowl of new world hops to deliver a contradictory yet cultured concoction. A classically ‘pale’ aroma and quenchingly fruity palate belies a broodingly dark and deceptive appearance. Can a beer be both ‘black and pale’? Time to consult the Magic 8 Ball.

stravale (3055) - Near Carrick-on-Shannon, IRELAND - FEB 18, 2012
Bottle from Great Grog, Edinburgh
Very dark brown black....ruby light edges...frothy tan head...good lacing
Aroma - Very hoppy...grass hops..bit musty...damp hay..some grapefruit in the background...dark caramel malts...whiff of car tyre...much more hops than malts
Taste - Loads of hops..grassy..some spicy hops..citrus grapefruit more prominent than aroma....resinous..dark caramel and roasted malts in the background
Palate - soft carb..medium....bitter hops......citrus tang. Finish of grapefruit and grassy hops...lots of bitterness but not too much...wee bit of coffee in the lingering tail
Overall - I prefer Black IPAs to be more ’stouty’ than this which is very much more towards the IPA part of the spectrum but the hops have great flavour in this beer. I still prefer Thornbridge Raven over this but it’s still a great beer

Benjii (3049) - Edinburgh, SCOTLAND - JAN 22, 2012
Bottle from Luvians, St Andrews. A black beer with a fair, light tan head. Aroma is lovely with passion fruit and grapefruit hop characters, presumably Nelson Sauvin. Juicy passion fruit and pineapple hop flavours give way to coffee, roasty malt, burnt toast and chocolate. The flavours are intense but this is a seriously drinkable beer. I would love to try this on cask. Brilliant stuff!

Black pour. Big tan head with plenty of lacing. Big danky, oniony, malty, caramel aroma. Huge hop presence. A little musty. Malty, danky flavor with some earthy notes. A slight pepper flavor. A little thin, but still decent.

Towey1989 (2720) - Stoke On Trent, Staffordshire, ENGLAND - APR 7, 2016
Keg at The Port Street Beer House, Manchester. A slightly hazy deep brown colour with a thick, tan head. Aroma of grapefruit, mango, peach, slight pineapple, subtle red berries, a little liquorice and some roasted malts. Taste of blackcurrant, dark fruits, some grapefruit, mango, slight peach, a little roasted malts, a hint of liquorice, maybe apple and subtle floral hops. Medium bodied and moderate carbonation. A dry, liquoricy, weirdly resinous, citrus hop bitterness in the finish. A very complex BIPA, surprised by all the flavours and aromas that I got. Very balanced but doesn’t give the big, hoppy bitterness I was expecting. Fruity and nice though.

Keg @ Bishops Arms, Hornsgatan. Looks clear, black with hints of ruby. Creamy tanned head, good lacing. Citrus hoppy and roasted aroma, ash, hay and uniral cake. Dry and smooth mouthfeel, medium carbonation. Great roasted taste with a fresh citrus hoppy spike. Licorice, grapefruit, kiwi, cold coffee and ash. Dry and bitter finish.

Keg in CP&K, Pimlico. Opaque black/very dark brown, foam off white 1 inch head. Nose is big and bold. Lots of hop - tropical fruit, pine, eucalyptus, earthy, shoe leather and shoe polish. It’s the earthiness that is making this work for me. Taste is earthy, christmas tree pine, menthol and eucalyptus, roasted malt, new shoes or that smell you get in shoe repairers and on the finish it’s grapefruit citrous bite. Probably the best black IPA I have had.
