COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our Black IPA fuses speciality malts with a tropical punch bowl of new world hops to deliver a contradictory yet cultured concoction. A classically ‘pale’ aroma and quenchingly fruity palate belies a broodingly dark and deceptive appearance. Can a beer be both ‘black and pale’? Time to consult the Magic 8 Ball.

On tap at the Three Tuns, Bristol 14/10/2012. Near black with moderate carbonation. Black coffee aroma with some pine and citrus fruit. Flavour was sweetish, with plenty more orange, roasted malts and a dry finish. Very good.

Svesse (8942) - Hässelby, SWEDEN - SEP 19, 2012
(Draught at Oliver Twist, Stockholm, 10 Sep 2012) Black colour with frothy, beige head. Malty, roasted nose with liquorice, burnt malt, grapefruit and resin. Roasted, malty taste with notes of liquorice, dark rye bread, pine needles, grapefruit and a slightly minty finish with a solid, piney bitterness. More than medium body, with a touch of sweetness. Very nice and tasty.

Bottled 05/05/12. A black beer with a thin beige coloured head. Good grapefruit hoppiness in the nose with more roast than other BIPAs. Similar in the mouth. Very bitter and hoppy but also pretty roasty. Pretty dry. Nice no doubt but not your typical BIPA.

Marduk (8622) - Reval, ESTONIA - MAY 27, 2015
Tap. Very dark brown, almost black color. Nice red hue. Medium size, beige head, stays. Hoppy, fruity, citrus, faint roast in aroma. Nice aroma. Hoppy, citrus, fruity, grapefruit in taste. Fruity hops in aftertaste. Medium carbonation. Medium bitterness. Light body. No alcohol detected, but then again I’m pretty drunk. Nice drinkability.

Bottle. Pours black with a big ol’ tan head. The nose is a bit spicy, plenty of wood, grassy hops, some bitter chocolate too. The taste is initially dry, a bit peppery, hoppy with hints of tropical fruits dipped in chocolate. The finish is long, flavorful. The body’s medium, the carbonation active. Overall, a very nice black IPA.

RichTheVillan (8443) - Birmingham, West Midlands, ENGLAND - MAY 30, 2013
Bottle from Cotteridge Wines; dark black pour with thin off white head, big pine hop aroma, piney hops come through in the taste and some citrus quite oily mouthfeel very resinous only a whiff of roasted malts.

DruncanVeasey (8426) - Nr NUNEATON, Warwickshire, ENGLAND - FEB 24, 2012
STUNNING, hop-smothered aroma; strawberry chew and guava with a waft of peated malt, smoked mackerel with black peppercorns, and patachouli incense rearing up in the background. About as perfect a marrage of hops and malts as I can imagine. Taste: yes. Breakfast mostly- juice, smoked mackerel, slices of fresh papaya, big slug of Laphroaig. I’m not usually up for breakfast but I’d imagine that’s what people have. Body: thick, slimy malt. Good as pitch with a firm, speckling tan head. One of the few BIPAs I’ve had that genuinely fuses the citrus and smoke without either detracting from the other. Discordant, harmonious, whatever. Delicious beer.

jonas (8278) - Garching close to the monks, GERMANY - JAN 30, 2014
Tap at Bar Animal. Herbal, leafy hop aroma, pleasant roast. Black, offwhite head. Old pine cones, needles, soapy roast, some umami, sticky hop resins, slightly vegetal. I am amazed how much the roast gets buried. Too heavy on the resinny hops for my taste.

4.4
Idiosynkrasie (8200) - Bielefeld, GERMANY - FEB 2, 2012
330ml bottle. Opaque black with superb off-white to beige frothy lacing and lasting head. Wonderful typical (American) IPA hoppy aroma with a sweet dark malt undertone, herbes. Soft beginning, a taste like a walk in the forrest, blueberry, resin, coniferes, a dry mouthfeel throughout, decent sweetness, decent sourness - what a combination! This is awesome, full of flavour but oh so drinkable. Superb!
