Bottle. Pours jet black with a mocha puffy pillow head that lays to a covering. Fair amount of sticky lacing. On the sniff is mango, liquorice, parma violets, smokey wood chips. Taste is pine, mango, burnt malts, roasted coffee, with a sweet long and drying bitter chocolate finish. Particular hoppy squeeze on the top rear tastebuds. Bold and assertive. Smoked flavour is shocking at first, this is my 2nd bottle of this, and I was in love 1/2 way down the 1st. Outstanding for a first batch beer CraftBeerNick (2476) - London Town, Greater London, ENGLAND - FEB 19, 2012
Bottle at home, 19th February 2012. Love the look of the bottle, looks like class. Aroma is roasted malt, dusty cocoa, a little coffee and dark chocolate, intriguing, I can’t get the hops. Pours a small head, good lacing. Taste is roasted malt a little grapefruit, pork sctrachings, burnt cracking, cocoa very smooth and perfect carbonation for me. Not bad, I love the Black IPA. shoulderbroken (4255) - Tokyo, JAPAN - MAR 8, 2012
Keg at the Southampton Arms. Dark brown colour with a thick creamy golden head. Aroma is lots of pine hops, bit of citrus, orange and grapefruit. Also quite malty, roasty and creamy, bit of chocolate and a whiff of smoke. Texture is very smooth and quite thick. Taste is very roasty, chocolate milk, bit of spice and something burnt. Finish alternates between lingering bitterness and more roasty chocolate maltiness. Really nice. ElManana (2079) - Scheldewindeke, BELGIUM - DEC 5, 2014
At Borefts 2014. Appearance is black, dark brown, no head. Aroma of hops, citrus, grapefruit, little bit roast. Taste is hoppy, roast, citrus. Very hoppy Black IPA. Lovely. justm (164) - Essex, ENGLAND - JAN 31, 2012
Bottle at home. Pours ebony black - pitch black with a creamy tight cafe-creme head. Big kick of grilled pineapple and lychee on the nose, an inviting floral, grassy hoppines. Slick and oily on the palate with a rounded smooth but subtle alcohol warmth. There is an intense fruity bitterness like charred pineapple which fills the mouth completely before being replaced with a faint coffee chocolate flavour all covered with plum, date and raisin. This leaves a dry residue on the tongue before those dark fruits re-emerge in decreasing surging waves. The aftertaste lingers in a dry dark tropical afterglow. A beautifully crafted and complex beer.

UPDATED: OCT 31, 2012 Bottle at home. Deep black pour, quite stout-like with a creamy tan head. Nose is big on hops, grapefruit, passion fruit, hint of mocha coffee. Similar flavours, intensely hoppy, juicy grapefruit, smooth rich mouthfeel and a resinous hop finish. Fantastic example of the style. STUNNING, hop-smothered aroma; strawberry chew and guava with a waft of peated malt, smoked mackerel with black peppercorns, and patachouli incense rearing up in the background. About as perfect a marrage of hops and malts as I can imagine. Taste: yes. Breakfast mostly- juice, smoked mackerel, slices of fresh papaya, big slug of Laphroaig. I’m not usually up for breakfast but I’d imagine that’s what people have. Body: thick, slimy malt. Good as pitch with a firm, speckling tan head. One of the few BIPAs I’ve had that genuinely fuses the citrus and smoke without either detracting from the other. Discordant, harmonious, whatever. Delicious beer. saxo (18208) - Højbjerg, Aarhus, DENMARK - AUG 10, 2012
Bottle. Huge head with good duration. Aroma and taste are rich hops, roast malt, chocolate, flowers and coffee. Great beer! knickskicks (1162) - - AUG 10, 2012
Keg. Black, beige head. Roasted malts, dark chocolate in the nose. Taste of roasted malts and tropical fruits. Hops linger. zimbo (960) - SCOTLAND - DEC 28, 2012
Via cask at the Hanging Bat before Christmas. A super beer but despite it all its the mouthfeel/taste which conquers all. The perfect balance between chewy hebal and tobacco qualities on the palate. Greatness.
