On tap. Pours a deep amber brown with a tan head. It has an aroma strong on spices and vanilla with some pumpkin and a bit of alcohol. The flavor is spices, malt, and vanilla up front leading to a sweet and spicy middle and aftertaste along with a medium body.

Pours with a near black body with a very thick and creamy tan head that leaves great retention. Aromas are of molasses, earthy roast, allspice, cinnamon and nutmeg. Chocolaty roast, low caramel, nutty. Flavors are of molasses, cola, brown sugar, low spice, nutty. Very tempered sweetness. Fuller carbonation, bready. Very full bodied without being oppressive. Good beer for the change of seasons. brokensail (16645) - Dublin, California, USA - NOV 2, 2012
Hazy mahogany color with a khaki head. Strong pie spice aroma, mostly all spice and nutmeg. A bit of banana, vanilla, and lots of pumpkin. Some nice cocoa, a bit of roast, and toast. The flavor is nicely sweet from chocolate, toasted bread, and vanilla. There’s a fair amount of all spice, some nutmeg, a hint of ginger, and a decent pumpkin flavor. bb (9789) - Alamo, California, USA - NOV 5, 2010

Copper red with a fizzy tan head. Pumpkin and cinnamon aroma and taste with some nutmeg in the finish. skoisirius (1908) - Earth, Washington, USA - SEP 1, 2009
On draft at the brewry. See through light orange in color which manages to be gorgeous! Distant nose mainly smelled of light malts and weaker spices. Drinks lagery and a bit watery, but the light spice does kick in towards the finish which saves this one from being a dud. DSG (15237) - Tel Aviv, ISRAEL - JAN 11, 2009
(10/30/08) Draught sample at the brewpub in San Francisco. Dark brown color. Aroma with yeast, pumpkin, spices and brown sugar. Sweetish flavor with some malt, pumpkin, sugary notes and a bit of yeast. Medium-bodied. MuertosPorter (24) - California, USA - NOV 20, 2008
I can not say that pumpkin ales get me excited, but this is fantastic! I couldn’t stop drinking this over Halloween weekend. My wife and I returned to pub three times during our five day stay in SF.
Deep amber in color with a quarter inch of tan head. Aromas of cloves, allspice, cinnamon, and toasted pumpkin seeds. The flavor also held clove, allspice, cinnamon, and pumpkin. Very rich, smooth, well balanced and easy drinking. This is not a "pumpkin pie" beer.
This was the perfect combination with the Barking Pumpkin braised short ribs.
The Barking Pumpkin on cask was even better, overall everything was a bit more pronounced.
