brown color, sudsy tan head, some lace. aroma of sweet malt, dried fruit. flavor has sweet fruit notes, dry fruits, plums, hint of rosted malt and chocolate. medium body, sweet finish, a bit too sweet for me. sampled with cornfield, whiling away the time at his place. zach8270 (4021) - Henrietta, New York, USA - NOV 7, 2009
(bottle - 500 ml fliptop) Deep brown pour with a thin tan head. Aroma is malty with some biscuit and fruit notes. Flavor is mildly fruity and sweet at the beginning with some smooth and caramel malts near the end. Finishes very clean. Very thin-bodied. fly (1486) - austin, Tejas, Texas, USA - OCT 19, 2004
bit underwhelming. sweet, but not overly so - was expecting that perhaps it would have been deeply malty and as with any beer perhaps complex. not exactly dry, but leaning that way from expectations. not lame, but other than the surprise in finding it on tap, completely unspectacular. beerlord (217) - Cumming, Georgia, USA - JAN 8, 2008
A touch of dark malt in the aroma from a ruby body so dark it’s almost black. Small tan head that quickly dissipates. a touch of roasted malt ans some sweetness come through followed by some hellertau flavor and bitterness. On the thin side, and definitely nothing special. tiggmtl (4544) - East York, Ontario, CANADA - OCT 16, 2004
Toasted malt aroma with some mild roastiness and an underlying sweetness to the aroma. Almost opaque, dark brown with thin tan head that recedes to cover. Stale malt flavour is a bit earthy and somewhat roasty but feels rather flat. Somewhat still with medium-full body, but feels very heavy. Sampled with MartinT and Rastacouere on tap at Spuyten Duyvil in Brooklyn. Saw the same beer on tap the next night at The Moan and Dove in Amherst, Mass. listed as Mahr’s "J".

Old yeasty figs thrown off by a defiant mineral nature...Insalubrity is unbalanced and is not helped by the stillness of it all...A full-bodied sweet malt does not embolden this boring bock/marzen/whatever-dark lager... nick76 (4399) - Tampa, Florida, USA - MAY 22, 2007
UPDATED: JUL 3, 2007 There is chocolate, paper, and toasted grains. The appearance is dark brown with a small tan head. The flavor is like the aroma and a little like a fruity porter. The palate is thin. I really just don’t love this. It’s OK but that’s it. marcus (10346) - Sacramento, California, USA - MAY 23, 2008
This black beer poured with a fluffy tan head and a mild caramel aroma. The flavor is mostly candy sugar and caramel malt. The body is too thin and ;there is an odd aftertaste. afterglow (1047) - Florida, USA - MAY 21, 2008
Bottle courtesy Degarth. Pours a clear dark brown with ruby highlights and a small off-white head. Aroma of tea and caramel. Taste is astringent tea. Medium thin mouthfeel with a mild amount of bitterness. This bottle was past its prime.
