Unfiltered Lager

Let’s be honest: You’re probably more likely to take illegal substances while you listen tothe heavy metal band Mastodon. But Mastodon and their crew had the opportunity to get shitfaced legally while they were playing the recent Sonisphere stop in Hockenheim, Germany on Saturday. Stephan Michel of Mahr’s Brau brewery created a limited edition Mastodon Premium Lager that was handed out to Mastodon and their crew at the show. They were reportedly "swallowing

Tawny gold with creamy white head. Mild grassy aroma. Malty, yeasty flavors with light bitterness. Enjoyable though not complex or unique.

500 ml bottle from Liquor Barn (Fern Valley); shared with Boo. Aroma: Moderate honey lemon sugar cookie; lighter dough and herbal accents. Appearance: Unfiltered caramel gold colour with soft, but constant carbonation holding up a foamy white head that settles into a ring. Flavor: Honeyed, cookie-like notes up front; herbal lemon hops are more present towards the finish, which is more dry than bitter. Palate: Medium body, sticky texture, soft carbonation, abrupt finish. Overall: A characterful lager that I’d happily buy more often if it were a bit more affordable ($4.99 for my bottle).

500 ml bottle into lager glass, no bottle dating. Pours lightly hazy/cloudy deep golden/amber color with a 1 finger dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lasts. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of cracker, biscuit, bread dough, light honey, herbal, grass, light pepper, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance of bready malt and earthy hop notes; with good strength. Taste of big cracker, biscuit, bread dough, light honey, herbal, grass, light pepper, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate herbal/spicy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of cracker, biscuit, bread dough, pepper, light honey, and herbal/grassy/toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Great robustness and balance of bready malt and earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and zero astringent flavors after the finish. Very clean on lager flavors, with minimal yeast notes present. Light-moderate dryness from bitterness, increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately crisp, and bready/grainy/creamy/sticky balanced mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 5.6%. Overall this is an awesome amber Kellerbier style! All around great robustness and balance of bready malt and earthy hop flavors; very smooth, crisp, clean, and refreshing to drink. Very flavorful and well balanced. Outstanding style example. A really enjoyable offering.

Translucent copper with no head. The aroma is straw and the flavor is grass and straw with a backend sweetness characteristic of lagers.

Bottle. Head is initially small, frothy/fizzy, white, mostly/fully diminishing. Body is dark yellow to light amber. Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (toasted grain), lightly to moderately hoppy (flowers), with light notes of honey and DMS. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, watery/syrupy texture, lively carbonation. Similar to other Mahr’s lagers; sweet and rather flabby with a fast-dying head and not all that much going on in the nose.

Orange hue, off white head. Nose is malt, subtle hops. Middle is some caramel, medium mouth feel, solid malt. Finish is malt in a friendly arm wrestle with a subtle hop kiss.

Mastodon rocks and all but I’m pretty sure that’s a goat. But the beer! Deep amber, slightly hazy with two fingers of foam. Nice hop/malt balance and tasty enough.

Draft @ Backcountry Pizza in Boulder: Clear, darker shade of gold. Creamy halo of foam. Maltcentric aromas of cookie, toasted baguette, Munich, lemony Spalter, piecrust and a hint of melanoidins. Stiff carbonation. Assertive breadcrust flavors emerge alongside sturdy poundcake and soft tobacco. Very malt-forward and rich, with a Munich-derived toffee-drizzled pecan signature throughout. Minerals and a leafy, herbal hop punch ward off the sugars adequately. A gripping toast of pils malt shows a vanilla cookie firmness with a slightly overstated raspiness, as the juicy malt continually enriches the mineral-laden core with considerable brawn. Orangey fruitiness augments the fat maltiness. Lemon hops sizzle at the sweetly malty finish, which reveals an intricate tapestry of vanilla wafer cookie, earthy pecan skin and silky toffee notes. A slammable malt bomb that’s free of flaws and brimming with Franconian character.

Pailhead (6539) - Plymouth, Michigan, USA - APR 10, 2016
Bottle: The aroma consists of mild grass and cereal notes. It pours a mostly transparent golden-orange with a touch of haze from some very fine sediment. It has a one finger white head that fades to a thin film outlined by a slightly thicker ring. There is some sporadic thin webbing left on the sides of the glass. The flavor starts with a touch of mild honey and cereal sweetness. The finish has mild grass/straw and the tiniest hint of apple. It’s light bodied with somewhat soft carbonation and mouthfeel. Overall, it’s decent and drinkable...nothing offensive, but nothing to get excited about either. A solid summer lawn mower beer.
