Let’s be honest: You’re probably more likely to take illegal substances while you listen tothe heavy metal band Mastodon. But Mastodon and their crew had the opportunity to get shitfaced legally while they were playing the recent Sonisphere stop in Hockenheim, Germany on Saturday. Stephan Michel of Mahr’s Brau brewery created a limited edition Mastodon Premium Lager that was handed out to Mastodon and their crew at the show. They were reportedly "swallowing

500mL bottle. Poured light-medium golden with a short, dense white head. The aroma picked up toasted bread and honey malts with earth and lesser citrus accents.. clean and well-balanced. The flavor found similar stuff.. bready notes, honey, and a kiss of molasses at the core, with light grainy citrus and toasted earthy notes around.. somewhat tart citrus and tasty sweeter malts on the long finish. Light-medium bodied with nice, creamy carbonation on the palate.. smooth feel and flow.. nice one!

Draught. Pours amber-gold with a moderate off-white head. Aroma is sweet, malty, floral, grassy, and lightly fruity. Taste is sweet malt, grass, flowers, yeast, light grain, and some fruitiness. Some bitterness. Light-medium body. Not-quite-medium carbonation. Crisp-ish mouthfeel with a slight oiliness.

Ar: Toasted malt with a deep caramel background; a little dried-flower hoppiness; malt richness over all. Ap: Deep amber-orange and clear; small white head with low retention, leaving a flimsy skinny ring and some strands. T: Broad, deep maltiness with a toasted backbone; clean profile; dried flowers; very light sweetness; bitterness is medium with an earthy hop taste; lingering lighter malt and bitterness on the finish. P: Medium-light body with very high carbonation; finish is medium-dry. O: A malt-forward lager; some interesting flavors, though it just doesn't seem to come together in the end.

Bottle. Lightly hazy resilient dark orange-amber with a big cream colored head. Aroma pilsener malts, flowers and bread. Tastes lightly floral and grassy and very lightly bitter. Smooth and lightish bodied.

Slightly hazy way deep golden with a pillowy white cap. Germanic fluffy bready lagered nose. Smooth flavor that’s very bready and slightly toasty. Lagerrific and smooth, not super clean as its unfiltered and fluffy, but it’s nice, bough super Germanic. Gently peppery/grassy hopped just to balance.

Aroma is lightly fruity, earthy hops, floral, potpourri, some malt, good. Appearance is amber golden, hazy, light tan head. Taste is floral, fruity, bitter, earthy hops, potpourri, I like this. Mouthfeel is light to medium body, light carbonation, floral fruity aftertaste. Overall, this is very solid and enjoyable on its own, let alone for the style.

Una cerveza muy común, nada del otro mundo, solo por ser de mastodon es una mas a la colección

Lightly hazed light amber color with a moderate beige colored head. Nice continual flow of bubbles. Malty/bready aromas with a bit of floral to herbal hops in the background. Some hints of citric zest as well. Sweet to toasted malt flavors. Lots of malt depth which runs through the course from start to finish. Spicy hops in the middle. Finish is also quite spicy. A full flavored lager. 5/12

Tawny gold with creamy white head. Mild grassy aroma. Malty, yeasty flavors with light bitterness. Enjoyable though not complex or unique.

500 ml bottle from Liquor Barn (Fern Valley); shared with Boo. Aroma: Moderate honey lemon sugar cookie; lighter dough and herbal accents. Appearance: Unfiltered caramel gold colour with soft, but constant carbonation holding up a foamy white head that settles into a ring. Flavor: Honeyed, cookie-like notes up front; herbal lemon hops are more present towards the finish, which is more dry than bitter. Palate: Medium body, sticky texture, soft carbonation, abrupt finish. Overall: A characterful lager that I’d happily buy more often if it were a bit more affordable ($4.99 for my bottle).

500 ml bottle into lager glass, no bottle dating. Pours lightly hazy/cloudy deep golden/amber color with a 1 finger dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lasts. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of cracker, biscuit, bread dough, light honey, herbal, grass, light pepper, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance of bready malt and earthy hop notes; with good strength. Taste of big cracker, biscuit, bread dough, light honey, herbal, grass, light pepper, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate herbal/spicy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of cracker, biscuit, bread dough, pepper, light honey, and herbal/grassy/toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Great robustness and balance of bready malt and earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and zero astringent flavors after the finish. Very clean on lager flavors, with minimal yeast notes present. Light-moderate dryness from bitterness, increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately crisp, and bready/grainy/creamy/sticky balanced mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 5.6%. Overall this is an awesome amber Kellerbier style! All around great robustness and balance of bready malt and earthy hop flavors; very smooth, crisp, clean, and refreshing to drink. Very flavorful and well balanced. Outstanding style example. A really enjoyable offering.
