Extra Hoppy Amber Weiss. Mahr’s master brewer has a new love -- an exciting and saucy new variety of Hallertauer hop called Saphir, German for "sapphire." There’s a metric ton of Saphir hops in this ground-breaking Weiss.

The aroma is sweet and decently hopped but not overwhelming. It’s mostly a balance beer but I am not crazy about the smell of either. The appearance is amber with lots of chunks and a large head. The taste is like the aroma. The palate is average for this type of beer. Overall not great and nothing like a proper hef but drinkable.

A nice lighter amber color, pretty to the sun, with a relatively full head and good lacing. The smell is more earth and herb and the palate is full; it gives the impression of weight without being dense. It’s very pleasant tasting, grain, earth, lightly floral. While not my favorite from this great brewery this is still a very unique and interesting wheat beer.

500 ml. bottle. Pours a medium, lasting ivory head, with a bit of lacing, over a cloudy, copper (SRM 17) body....nose is bread, yeast, light banana/bubblegum, touch of clove....taste is bread, light banana, hints of floral honey, hints of tangerine, light clove, finishing with light spicy bitterness....mouth feel light of medium, carbonation low. This is a different Hefe in that the usual dominant aromas and flavors, while present, are matched by yeast and hop presence. BJCP 7/3/13/4/7

Bottle from Wino’s. Pours hazy golden with a white head. Banana ester aroma. Lighter side of medium bodied with an earthy texture. Flavor of pale wheat malts with the banana bubble phenols, but not overpowering. The hops and clove really come out on the finish, almost creating somewhat of an off flavor.

Sampled at an esbls tasting. This is kind of plastic. Disappointing. I had higher hopes.

50 cl bottle from Doodler. Thanks Scott. Nose of banana, cloves, yeast, and a flowery note. Murky brown tinged yellow with a medium pale beige head. Flavor is peppery, banana, and light bitterness.

This weiss beer lacked a strong, distinct bouquet and flavor. There was some tang in the taste and the body was smooth and full. I expected more.

Bottle from perfect pour. Pours brown with a thin white head. Not much on the nose. There’s some floral hop flavor on the tongue which essentially subsumed the hefeweizeness of the beer. Clean finisher. Interesting take on an old face but not to my liking.

Bottle:   Cloudy amber, a little fiery, large foamy off-white head, few spots of lacing.   Pale floral wheaty nose.   Soft hoppy wheat like flavors up front.   Fairly malty.   Doesn’t have the classic clove or banana that others do, but guessing since this one is hopped more and supposed to be on the Amber side, its not going to be like your regular German Hefe.   Spritzy on the tongue, covers up the heaviness of the beer.   Finishes very bubbley, wheaty, lingering hop and malty mealiness, a bit yeasty.   Nothing earth shattering, but comes across as very interesting.   I keep sipping this beer to try and figure it out better.   I guess I wished it would have a bit of banana & clove, but it would probably clash with the hops and maltiness.   Entertaining at least.

lightly hazy amber, bit of a gusher, foams a ton, head goes down relatively quickly leaves nice lacing... loads of grassy hops, quite spicy, light clove and banana notes... lively medium thin bodied... lightly toasty malt, grassy, cereal grains, some lighter than expected spicing... just kidding, its very spicy/almost herbal... very nice beer, not necessarily a refreshing wheat, but excellent flavor...
