Ahhh another superbly crafted brew from MBC. Dark slick and lucious. nose of black patent malt, some hops and oysters. Same keeps with body but hops abound and oyster fades to mellow. Chocolate replaces.
A citrusy take on an already pretty novel style. There’s a lot of characteristic bright, bold Maine Beer Co. hop flavor in this beer, with citrus and pine dominating, and the roasted notes create a lot of flavor before finishing refreshing and dry. Mighty fine. glennmastrange (2880) - hobe sound, Florida, USA - NOV 21, 2015
Bottle. Moderate aromas of dark bread and coffee for the malt, resin for the hops, earth for the yeast, with background notes of tar, wood, tobacco and a hint of whiskey. Head is small, frothy, light tan, with some spots of lacing and is mostly diminishing. Color is very dark brown. Flavor starts slightly sweet and lightly to moderately acidic, then finishes lightly acidic and moderately bitter. Palate is medium, watery, with a lively carbonation. Nice deep aromas and flavors in this top notch Black IPA.

Pours a dark chestnut brown color that appears pitch black and completely opaque in the glass without even the slightest hint if lighter color. There’s a two finger, frothy beige head that very slowly settles into a thick, lasting ring. Very good retention with streaks of soapy lacing coating the glass on the way down.
Dank, earthy aroma with prominent resinous, oily hops along with grassy pine needle, a touch of citrus and a slightly smokey, dark malt backbone. Underneath the earthy hops, the smokey element of the malt bill gives off a very subtle phenolic presence but it isn’t very distracting or unpleasant. Some liquid smoke and charcoal along with dark chocolate, oatmeal, robust coffee bean and sweeter, dessert-like malt character. The malts begin to overpower the hops as it warms but the nose remains complex and inviting.
On the fuller end of medium body with slight viscosity and soft carbonation. Very dry and bitter up front with the earthy hops and charred malt flavors playing off of each other. Strong sticky, resinous hop flavor up front with grass, pine and spruce tip but it’s missing the subtle citrus presence found in the nose. The hops are countered by a deeply roasted dark malt backbone that is somewhat acrid and nearly burnt tasting. The smoke presence is a bit stronger than in the aroma with hints of ash, charcoal and burnt toast along with used coffee grinds, oatmeal and dark chocolate. This beer has a decent balance of hops and malt but tastes very one dimensional with a ton of tongue scraping, dry bitterness and overwhelming roast. Needs a lot more sweetness to balance things out. Overall, this isn’t a terrible beer but it’s boring, a bit harsh and tough to drink. arnold931 (1263) - Iowa, USA - SEP 28, 2015
Draft at Hopleaf. Pours black with small tan head. Nose and taste is coffee, chocolate with hop bitterness. One of the better black IPAs. Slubgob (330) - West Hartford, USA - SEP 27, 2015
Expecting a hefe based on the name. Oops. Pours very dark brown with cream head. Nose of Sani-clean per the brothers in law. Hops mixed with dark cocoa. In the mouth similar. Finish with dry chocolate,a touch of bitter. Quite nice. Lubiere (13941) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - SEP 18, 2015
A deep dark black ipa with a super luscious thick frothy brown head. In aroma, sweet fruity chocolate malt with coffee grind, musty floral hops, grapefruit pulp, very fragrant. In mouth, a nice bitter sweet chocolate with coffee grind, musty character, resinous floral hops with citrusy notes, predominantly bitter chocolate. Bottle dated 08-06-2013. Excellent condition. neepsntatties (2001) - Portland, Oregon, USA - AUG 23, 2015
Bottle from Rick G. of Lardo. Colour...onyx black with a thick tan head. Nose...very hoppy while also being very roasty toasty. Palate...frothy, bitter, and roasty with ashen chocolate, burnt wheat toast and hop dust. The mid palate is quite bitter and the finish is quite dry and long.
