Blondibock was first brewed as Bluesapalooza Blonde Bock in the summer of 2011, and was so popular that we brought her back in 2012.

Brewed as a German-style Blonde Bock in March of this year, she was racked into Heaven Hill Bourbon Barrels after two weeks in the fermentation vessels. There, this beer matured for three months picking up much of her color and flavor from the oak barrels.

A vigorous pour into my teku glass produces a one-finger thick, pale tan colored head. The beer is a lightish amber color (like a light honey) and shows a lightly hazed, light amber hue when held up to the light. The nose smells of rich, almost butter, concentrated pale malt, vanillin notes, and a sweet, though complex, pale malt grain character. The malt and barrel character combine to produce an almost fruitiness that sort of reminds me of rum soaked golden raisins, though without the alcoholic warmth. There is a very soft, sort of nutty, toasted oak character here, and perhaps just a hint of spice character.

Somewhat sweet, richly textured and malt through the middle, and the finish just sees a dense, chewy, incredibly mellow and smooth Bourbon Barrel character settle into the palate with a decadent, vanilla soaked sweetened coconut flavor. The sweet malt and barrel character again combine to suggest at an almost fruit character; I can best describe it as golden raisin with a touch of orange marmalade, but that is a bad description. Sweet pale malt provides a sort of sweet, not quite caramelized, grain cracker like note, as well as a chewy bread like sweetness. There is a hint of herbal character here, I am not sure if it is residual hop notes, or just a suggestion from the barrel character, and the bitterness is here, but definitely on the light side to allow the malt character to dominate here.

I really like how smooth the barrel character is here; it is so well integrated and manages to not pick up the heat and harsh character that many a barrel aged beer do; in fact, this is one of the smoother barrel aged beers that I have ever had. A surprisingly good beer that I was not expecting at all; really quite nice and I have to thank DovaliHops for sending me this one.

Tap at brewery. Pour dirty orange looking. Nose is all vanilla barrel. Tastes of birbin, vanilla, oak I guess there is a heller bock somewhere back there. Sweet finish.

August 2016 - Bottle share at Chriso’s Saturday Garden Warm Up as ’Mammoth Blondibock’. Thanks! Dark yellow, clear, still, foamy off-white head. Aroma has lots of fudge, vanilla and bourbon. Nice. Body is smooth with soft carbonation. Taste is buttery, resinous, light bourbon, sweet. A bit too sweet for my taste. (3.2)

Pre-GBBF 2016 tasting at Chris&Ruth’s, Day-1. It pours a clean golden color with a small off white head. Aroma is sweet fruity malty with notes of caramel and wood. Taste is also herbal spicy woody with sweet malts and caramel notes. Medium bodied with good carbonation. Overall, meh

The great ChrisO pre GBBF gathering. Lightly hazy gold beer, no head. Smooth palate, softish. Modest carbonation. Soft pale malts, some cream. Lovely fruit bourbon. Mild vanilla. Touch of bourbon spice. Punchy and tasty.

500 ml bottle at the ISKTR 2016, Hervanta, Finland. Thanks Euphemos!
Slightly cloudy golden color with no head. Sweet honey, mild bitterness and alcohol in the aroma. Super sweet flavor with honey and whiskey. I couldn’t say this is Heller Bock.

@ISKTR 2016. BBE 30-nov-2016. Hiivaisa, alkoholinen, brittisiiderimäinen tuima tuoksu, suutuntuma hapokas, todella alkoholinen, jää aika yksinuottiseksi. Viinapommi lähinnä.

50 cl bottle @ ISKTR 2016.
Pours hazy golden color with a small head. Apricot and honey on the nose, ripe banana, subtle bourbon notes, faint wheat. Flavor is apricot and peach, honey and yeast, strong wood. Not a Heller Bock, interesting.

50 cl bottle @ ISKTR ’16
Aroma has biscuits and some odd cereals. Also dried fruits. Flavour has biscuits, cereal, alcohol and dried fruits. Also honey. Not the most typical heller bock. Sweet.
