A sly grin says that Mankato Brewery’s Crooked Rook has something up it’s sleeve. The flavors of bittersweet chocolate, coffee, and caramel conspire with the hops’ floral and woody notes, making this beer one cheeky little devil.

Draft at Sickies Fargo. Almost opaque maroon color. Fruity coffee aroma. Taste is earthy licorice stewed prune candy. Interesting.

Keg @ Sickie’s Garage, Fargo. Deep brown pour with a large, creamy tan head. Nose has some ashy charred grain. Dark chocolate. Coffee creamy. Creamy, pillowy body with a fairly dry finish. Very smooth. Mild peppery bitterness. Actually quite nice.

Bottle: Nearly black with a short, chunky, oatmeal head. Slightly smoky dark chocolate scent. Chocolate malt, vanilla, sugared-black coffee taste....a bit of earthy bitter. Nice and rich....really enjoyable.

Pours a dark brown color with light tan colored head. Roasted malts, light cocoa, a little oak-like note, and some hints of coffee on the nose; follows onto the palate. Medium, almost full bodied. Finishes with mostly roasted malt and a little cocoa.

Got in a trade with The-Adjunct-Hippie. 12 ounce bottle into pint glass, best before 2/10/2017. Pours clear nearly opaque dark brown color with a 2 finger fairly dense and fluffy light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toasted biscuit, dark bread, light nuttiness/smoke, herbal, floral, wood, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness. Slight yeast fruitiness as well. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop notes; with good strength. Taste of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toasted biscuit, dark bread, light nuttiness/smoke, herbal, floral, wood, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate herbal/spicy hop and roast bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toasted biscuit, dark bread, herbal, floral, wood, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; with a great roast/hop bitter/sweet balance, and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light dryness from hop/roast bitterness, lightly increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/bready, and lightly sticky/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 5.6%. Overall this is a very nice American porter. All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; very smooth and easy to drink. Great malt complexity with nice supporting hop flavors; without being too roasty, bitter, or drying. A very enjoyable offering.

12oz bottle pour brownish black with thin tan head, light lacing minimal carbonation. Taste like it smells with smoke being the main thing i sense an ok porter.

Tap at the brewery. Black of course. Very heavy roast and aome coffee and dark choco, and this is also very sweet for the style. Lots of sugar, lactose possibly, at least.that is what it tastes like to me.

A very respectable porter from the land of sky blue water. Pours to a beautiful light brown head over a jet black body. Chocolate is most prevalent in the aroma thought there is some northwoods pine in there, too. Both sweetness and bitterness are in the taste, along with a little sourness. A pleasantly light body make it a very worthwhile beer. Poured from a bottle with an "enjoy by" date of 09-07-16.
