2 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 6/20
I taste almost no ’hefe’ in this beverage. The appearance is pretty cool, but that’s about it. This is a malt liquor; pure and simple.
Amazing what bottles I find in the beer fridge. Not sure how long this was hiding nor exactly when it appeared, though I’m estimating it’s at most recent a 2014 vintage. First two glasses were sort of like a barleywine, a quickly disappearing head, plums in the aroma and a boozy, medium bodied taste. The third glass was all the settled yeast and a significantly different look (brown vs. and initial purplish amber). Tough to rate because the bottle may have rested too long. keepersj12 (3133) - Sicklerville, New Jersey, USA - JAN 23, 2015
A bold try. Pours Amber with no head and lots of floaters. Not much hefe about it. The aroma is fruity. The flavor has sour cherries and cough syrup. It has an alcohol bite and is quite warming. The review isn't very flattering but it's not too bad.

Date tasted: July 19, 2013 ... Glassware: Duvel oversized snifter... Occasion: having endured the hottest week in a Jersey decade, kicking back and hoping for refreshment with a complex hefe....Appearance: pours out a spectacle of rushing head formation; having settled, the beer becomes opaquely light brown, almost muddy, with a thin, pencil-thin off-white head; when held to the light, microscopic bubbles slowly hover upward ... Aroma: some pilsner fragrance collides with a malty stiffness that doesn’t make for a happy wedding in the nostrils... Palate: powerful, furnace-like impact on the throat--the 9% ABV is overly exposed and makes the tasting a bit of a chore...Taste: mostly barley, as wheat and Saaz are relegated to a supporting role; a bit of iced tea to the flavor (?) with the tongue wondering where the "softening" qualities of the wheat/malt/hop combination indicative of the style are to be found... Overall: having bought this bomber with a gift card, I felt little danger in trying a beer made by "manly men," and still I had hope this beer would be a powerful 9% wheat beer that would wed well with the summer heat; instead, this self-proclaimed "sort of a cross trainer" really doesn’t profile well enough to merit a second taste or a friendly recommendation...but I can say it does deliver the alcohol well enough to persuade my critical eye to overlook its stranger genre-bending qualities....

It poured a dark orange/brown and yielding no head whatsoever into my chalice. Mild dark haziness showed throughout the body. No lacing occurred. The smell was sweet through the malts with some light plum coming through as the beer warms. The taste was the same with the previously noted flavors and settled through some odd bitter flavors that I can’t really quite right place. The alcohol came through in the taste as the beer warmed up. The palate was about a medium coating the tongue and mouth decently. No sharpness hits the tongue. I would say this was mildly drinkable. Overall, this is a good beer that I’d come back to.

Burned orange pour, off white head. Very hazy brew. Aroma of caramel, spen hops, oranges and something odd, a yeasty/plastic note. Flavor is overly sweet and just has a one note caramel/yeast flavor. Not so great. HeistAlmighty (1156) - Saint John, New Brunswick, CANADA - NOV 5, 2012
650ml bottle. We made a rookie mistake and forgot this beer would settle and forgot to stir up the sediment before pouring. First glass out was clear, middle one hazy, last was completely opaque. Sludge in the bottle of the bottle. Orange/brown colour, not much head, last glass looked like a melted root-beer float. Aroma is barley syrup, English yeast, and banana. Taste is a little better than the aroma, some decent burnt sugar, but there was a funky aftertaste. Opaque glass had a much stronger yeast taste. Overall, this was a hot mess. Barley wine isn’t supposed to be filtered, I suppose, but skimming the sludge out of this would have been a good idea. annunz123 (962) - Taunton, Massachusetts, USA - AUG 29, 2012
Malt, spice, and dark fruit in the aroma. More of the same in the flavor, which starts sweet and finishes with spice and a little bitterness. Good, but not great. rocbyter (2134) - Waterbury, Connecticut, USA - AUG 16, 2012
Strong malty apple aroma with a sharp alcohol bite. Cloudy orange color with a small white head. Light beginning with a moderate alcohol finish. Not much wheat flavor but still not that great. Pawola22 (3262) - Woodridge, Illinois, USA - JUN 7, 2012
22oz bottle from Downeast Beverage Co in Portland, ME. Pours a cloudy, dull orange, amber tinted body with a thin, off-white head that dissipates quickly and leaves a light lacing. Aroma is pretty sweet with a decent mix of fruits. Caramel and wheat malts with some breadiness. A few esters with some orange citrus along with some prunes and figs. I get a touch of clove or herbal spice in there too. Flavor is similar and awfully sweet. A bit of a bread to the caramel and wheat malts up front with less of a fruity mixture than the aroma. Still some orange citruses and just a light prune note in the middle while the hops offer a light herbal spice towards the end as the wheats pick up a touch and this finishes pretty sweet and slightly dry. Spiciness from the hops comes out more as this warms a bit and the sweetness isn’t cloying, but a light booze note seems a bit medicinal. Medium length aftertaste following a medium-full body and very light carbonation. Overall, I wasn’t really a fan of this. It wasn’t bad, but just didn’t work for me. Pretty sweet with a slightly herbal and spicy hopping as well as a bit of a medicinal boozy note. Eh...
