3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
This is a slot barleywine style beer. It certainly has the heavy maltiness that one would expect, but it is well balanced by just enough hops. I am not sure why this rated so low, expect to think that those that have rated this have not had many beers of this style. This is a good representation of the style.
Bottle... Pours clear and Longhorn-orange. The nose furnishes candied dry-fruits, tea biscuits and a hint of smoke. Slightly medicinal as well. Full-bodied and sticky with modest carbonation. The flavor presents malty-sweet toffee up front and piercing, metallic bitterness on the backside. Finishes bittersweet (more sweet than bitter) with a nickel aftertaste. Bomber bottle, 2013 vintage. Pours a dirty orange color without head. Aroma is interesting, smoked apples, light figs and prunes.... Old English toffee.

I prefer my barely wines slightly oxidized, but I should have been more careful with this one at only 7.7%. The thinner body does don’t help as it ages. Molasses, caramel with a hint of smoke. The finish displays dark fruit. The smoke is mild but really all the flavors are. Meh
1 pint, 6 fl oz bottle (summer 2013). Pours a hazy amber/brown with a fairly small and short-lived off-white head. Aromas are cherry, molasses, and some earthiness. Tastes are sweet malts, a little salt, and some alcohol. Tangy, alcohol warmth, low carbonation. Admittedly probably a bottle that should’ve been drank sooner but this was not a great beer. hopdog (13102) - Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA - JAN 21, 2014
22oz bottle. Poured a copper color with a smaller sized off white head. Where’s the smokiness - trace if at all. Toast, caramel, some vanilla, some woodiness, and lighter fruitiness. puboflyons (3488) - Allenstown, New Hampshire, USA - MAY 10, 2013
From the 22 fl. oz. bottle. The pour is amber copper with a modest head and good clarity. The idea of a smoked barleywine intrigued me but on the nose the smoke was muted while the alcohol-seeped malts were forward. The body was medium and on the creamy side. The flavor was pucker-up biting with noticeable alcohol and an astringent paint thinner type aftertaste. Cellaring this might mellow it.

A - Pours a foggy dark amber brown with glowing red hues around the edges. A micro bubble off-white head that leaves beautiful lacing.
S - Smokey rich toffee malt, toasted sugar, cherries, notes of pine, alcohol.
T - Toffee malt with hints of smoked wood. The subtle smokiness is evident from the start all the way to the aftertaste and produces a welcomed dryness to balance out the malt. Hints of grapefruit and pine towards the finish.
A highly drinkable Barleywine. The smoke adds a nice twist. The is not an in your face beer. It is definitely worth trying.

Bottle from Grain & Vine. Muddy orange amber with ring. Caramel fruit cardboard aroma with a touch of smoke and alcohol. Sweet fruity caramel with sharp bitter astringency and lingering medicinal smoke. Gets better as it warms.
Much better warm. An extra point for Overall and for flavor despite the medicinal aftertaste. rocbyter (2159) - Waterbury, Connecticut, USA - JUL 28, 2012
Dry and lightly chalky malt aroma. Clear red color with a small tan head. Mild quick bitter beginning with a building sweetness to a smokey, light medicine finish. michael-pollack (4959) - King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, USA - MAY 7, 2012
22oz. Bottle: Aroma of smoked barley. Poured deep amber/brown in color with a small, off-white head that disappeared except for around the edges. Cloudy. Lightly sparkling. Full of small-sized particles throughout. Flavor is medium sweet. Tastes of malt, bacon, slight vanilla, and slight smoke. Medium body. Oily, then lightly dry, slightly chalky texture. Soft to average carbonation. Malt, smoke, bacon, vanilla finish is medium sweet and lightly dry. 7.7%ABV is completely hidden throughout. adrian910ss (2594) - Doylestown, PA, USA - APR 29, 2012
22 oz bomber. Pours a rusty amber color with a medium sized light beige head. Aroma of Candied malt and light hints of smoke. Taste is much the same
