Clear but very, very dark beer with a beige head. Aroma is light malt and sour fruit. Flavour has a bit of malt, chocolate and caramel in there but the initial hit is mostly sweet fruit. Bottle 500 ml at home, into a Guinness glass, ABV 2.8%
Pours a very dark mahogany brown coloured beer, with a small tan head on top, with a good density,good retention too, light lacing left on the glass.
Aroma has caramel, milky chocolate, light floral.
Taste is sweet, malty with hints of milky chocolate, iron.
Thin body with low carbonation resulting in a kind of watery beer, but very drinkable.

Dark brown, no head. Aroma is similar to fruit cake. Medium sweetness, little sour.

Delicious extremely dark brown (black?) Colour with opacity in the light. Thick, creamy, pale tan head. Nutty, smooth, malt on the nose and a really rich bread/toast. Rich English crystal and chocolate malts which come through on the palate heavily. Creamy sweet toffee which is prominent but there is a superbly flowery and very mildly spicy hoppiness which plays second fiddle to the malt but intermingles quite uniquely throughout. When I bought this bottle I had no idea of this beer’s significance for the history of brown ales - rather alien to me. Even after reading the label, which left me with a certain scepticism, I was surprised to see such a dark walnut brown beer pouring, with a decent looking creamy head. There isn’t much of an aroma, except a very feeble chocolate maltiness. Flavours stay around the malts and caramels, with a touch of metal and chocolate, and virtually no bitterness. It is really nice. Medium to light bodied, with moderate carbonation, it is still velvety and even sticky on the tongue (not cloying though). I was glad to have it, and I’d be happier to have more of it. This pleasant brown ale is the product that resurrected the “Brown Ale” term over a century ago. It could make many other brown ales out there ashamed of themselves. Historically it has nothing to do with “Mild Ale”. Yet, if you read above, the style where it was filed under…

UPDATED: FEB 20, 2014 Bottle that Dad shared with me- cheers! Dark brown with a thin beige head and a slight fizz. Chocolate dominates with some roasted malt too. It?s a bit thin, but that actually seems to work in this case. The metallic taste of pasteurization is surprisingly muted and the beer is far better than I expected. 500ml bottle from Tesco - Clear, dark brown with a tan head. Quite heavy roasted malt in the aroma, along with coffee and malty sweetness. Sweet and roasted flavour with a thin body. For a quid, it wasn’t bad.
