Black color with tan foam. Mild dark chocolate, floral, pine sap aromas. Medium bodied. Semi sweet chocolate, dry bakers chocolate, caramel flavors with some dry pine needles, mild alcohol twang to finish--good JCB (3999) - Durham, North Carolina, USA - JUN 8, 2012
Bottle from a trade, and found myself very pleasantly surprised by this beauty. I’m not as cold on this style as some of my buds, but I also rarely expect to be too impressed. These Sooners have definitely produced on the finer examples of the style I’ve had. Silky body, plenty of body and grit but nothing soupy or leaden about it. Nice hop presence in the nose, with the roasted malts bringing out some rind and complementing the other bitter notes well. Taste is a bit more dry but still plenty complex and flavorful. Well done. Out of a bottle. Nice aroma of roasted malt and slight earth hop. Almost opaque with a nice brown head. Taste is great roast with perfect balance with the bittering. One of the best examples of a black IPA marrying the roast and hops without overdosing on either. Bricktop86 (894) - Moore, Oklahoma, USA - MAY 26, 2012
UPDATED: AUG 17, 2012 Pours opaque black with three fingers of tan head. Smells mostly of piney hops and a bit of dark fruits. The tastes flip flops between roasted malts and pine all the way through the finish. Fruity and spicy flavors as well. Feels creamy on the palate. Overall a very nice beer. I’m glad to see a good interesting beer brewed in Oklahoma. CaptainCougar (7634) - Columbia, Maryland, USA - MAY 20, 2012
22oz bottle thanks to unclemike: pours a mostly opaque black with a stringy-lacing light tan head. Has a lightly sweet dark caramel malty nose with lots of fresh resiny hops. Starts with good fullness and sweet dark malts with a healthy amount of crisp piny bittering and flavor hops before a drier bittersweet finish with lingering hop notes. Well balanced and flavorful.

Malty. Some bitter citrus and dryness from the hops, balanced with a sticky slightly chocolate maltiness. Not overdone, tastes great. msante79 (2244) - Mount Prospect, Illinois, USA - MAY 10, 2012
Bottle from Cellar Wine and Spirits-Norman. Pours very dark brown with tan head. Aromas of roasted malts, chocolate, grapefruit, and some pine. Flavors of sweet roasted malts, chocolate, some citrus, and a ton of pine. Little too much sweet maltyness for liking, but this was decent for a black IPA. Originally reviewed: 4/1/11. No date on the bottle, so I have no idea how fresh this is.
22oz wax-capped bottle. Poured into a pint glass. Pour yields a deep dark black with a finger-width tan head on top. Good lace left behind. Nose carries pine aromas, faint metal, and finishes out with mild cocoa powder. The aromas weaken considerably as I sip.
The mouth is moderately-full and creamy. Carbonation is on the low side. The flavors here are odd for the style. There’s a mellow hop presence right away, but there an herbal element to this. Juniper? Clove? I can’t place it exactly, but it’s there. Roasted qualities are absent. Mild chocolate notes on the back end. This one was interesting. Not my favorite of the new style, but I appreciate its uniqueness. With the gap in reviews, something tells me this bottle has a little age on it. I’d love to compare this to a fresh bottle/keg. unclemike (3163) - Junction City Kansas, Kansas, USA - APR 20, 2012
Clear dark brown with a creamy beige head that lasts a hell of a long time. Leaves good lacing. Aroma is perfumy floral hops, citrus hops, herbal notes, and a little roast. Flavor is caramel, chocolate, and roasted malt along with floral and citrusy/grapefruit hops. Medium-bodied with soft carbonation and a smooth mouthfeel with lingering hop bitterness hellbilly (3306) - scottsdale über alles, Arizona, USA - APR 16, 2012
bottle from swillbur 11/25/11.
black tinted reddish brown with a tan head.... nice looking brew.
it smells and tastes of bubble gum, roast, earthy spicy hops, grapefruit, a touch of choco and lots of pine. roasty dry finish.
i’m not a fan of hop combo in this... seems odd and out of place. 7/4/6/3/14
