Old Empire is brewed using Optic malt, a subtle and paler grain that will allow other flavours to come through on the palate. Goldings and Fuggles hops are added to this brew, which is then late hopped with the American Cascade variety for extra hop strength.

Date tasted: July 7, 2013... Glassware: Wychwood Hopbgoblin tumbler... Occasion: celebrating a lazy Sunday’s end....Appearance: nice pale copper body that is clear and softly bubbling; cloudy white head that laces and quickly dissipates... Aroma: bready malts assert dominance--such an English treat--with some buttery notes... Palate: medium-bodied, smooth and buttery; some heat on the exhale,, despite the modest ABV.. Taste: extremely soft hints of toffee and hops; powerful display of malt high on the tongue; formidable... Overall: a curiosity purchase, using a gift card for a slew of brews including this one; I know Marston is renown for its bitter, and thought the IPA would carry the flag; malty , yes, and a quality sipper with a slightly smoked, buttery, definitively scotch finish....still, tough to place among the more formidable IPAs from either side of the pond....

Bottle from Aldi, Washington. Bright golden coloured with a thick head of white foam. It has a citrus, pine, toffee and peppery hop flavour followed by an earthy bitter-sweet finish. Good.

500ml bottle. It’s decent bottled low boost English bitter. Nice American hop kiss is a peck on the cheek in subtlety . This beer would probably be vibrant from a cask conditioned sample. Peanut and cracker nose is cool and interesting. Yeah, not a bad brew.

Clear, golden colour with some white lacing. Light, hoppy aroma with some pine and coriander. Light taste, some bitterness, kinda soapy towards the end. Light body, medium carbonation, soft mouthfeel. It’s nice but a bit light for my taste.

Light golden color with a smallish, somewhat fizzy light tan head. Aromas of caramel, floor malt, butterscotch, light herbs, with some minerals in the background. Pale to lightly caramelized malt in the front. Middle still has the malt going on, but the hops are working their way in. Herbal to minty hop. Quite bitter in the finish and linger with a touch of pepper. Traditional and refreshing. The empire would be pleased. 12/12

Bottle from a local shop, Tallinn. BB 23.07.2017. Clear pale golden with frothy creamy white head that drops rather fast. Aroma and flavour: soft yeasty fruity, toffeeish, earthy. Hops rather subdued. Slightly too watery on the palate; overall not too enjoyable, even with thirst.

Bottle. Gold in colour. Hoppy; strong hoppy aroma & flavour; grassy hops. Malty; toasty malts, caramel & vanilla. Tangy rich malty with moderately bitter hoppy taste. Drinkable. (2015-06-06)

Perfectly palatable if not excellent. Pours a lovely copper, nice flowery hops on the nose. Downhill from there. Strangely flat carbonation, may have been the temperature of a dud bottle. Taste is average, sweeter and less bitter than I’d expect from an IPA.
