Aroma is malty with a hint of tart cherry and a bunch of dark fruit. Fig and raisin perhaps. There is a touch of warming alcohol as well.
Head disappeared very fast.
The combination of taste and aroma is great, the aroma is backed by chocolate and sweetness balanced with a touch of clean bitterness.
Palette is viscous and almost chewy
Over all this is a great beer, I wish it was easier to get hold of.

Appearance: Clear dark brown wit ruby highlights and cm thick ivory head which was quick to disappear.
Aroma: Raisin, caramel/toffee, bread, liquorice, slightly vinous, stewed fruit/fruit cake.
Taste: Medium sweetness, low/medium bitterness and low sourness.
Palate: Thick smooth texture, light/medium body, average carbonation, lingering dry, dried fruit, caramel, sweet but slightly bitter finish with subtle alcohol warmth.

Intensely rich. Very nice beer. Fruity and strong flavour. Not much alcohol. Very tastey indeed. Lovely mouth feel. winkle (478) - Brisbane, AUSTRALIA - JUL 31, 2003
Well its as cold as it gets here (4 C ) and this was a beer for the occassion. Deep red body with an off white heat. Heady fumes of fruit malt and molasses issue forth. This is a good strong ale, malty with plums and other fruit to the fore and a slightly malty finish. Not real complex but good anyway. imdownthepub (14555) - Banbury, Oxfordshire, ENGLAND - SEP 10, 2003
Bottled, Pateurised. Dark red beer with thick chunky lasting head. Lovely smooth rich treacely flavours, almost port wine like, red grapes and plums, sweet malts, a very decent bottled beer (brown bottle!!!)

Fruity sweet beer. Old sourness, wooden oaky richness. Strongly apple - apple taste and apple smell. Brown and sweet and delicious in a very well-balanced way. DuffMan (10434) - the land of bitumen, beef & beer, Alberta, CANADA - JUN 22, 2009
Sometimes the circumstance under which a beer is consumed can elevate one’s appreciation of it. We had just arrived the cabin in Arrowtown and I drank this while the room warmed up from -2 degrees, and I must say that there could not have been a more perfect beer to help pass the time and chase the cold away. Deep copper with golden highlights. Aromas of burnt sugar and rye bread, and prunes. Delicious flavours of burnt toffee, sherry, and prunes. Full bodied, sweet but not cloying. ralphdot (1094) - Billingham, Durham, ENGLAND - JAN 19, 2012
7.6% very deep amber with a thin head, sweet fruity aroma, fruity taste with some caramel, very nice beer. Grzesiek79 (4297) - Radom, POLAND - MAR 20, 2012
earthy, grass, hay, butterscotch, bubblegum, alcohol, red, cloudy, minimal head, heavy cloying sweetness, medium bitterness, lightly sour, medium body, slick feel, soft carbonation, long finish, CEZ (415) - Milano, ITALY - OCT 17, 2003
Strong with caramel (and quite strong in alcohol, for an old ale), rich with warm flavors (fruits, roasted malt). Balanced and delicious; my favorite Marston's to date. It's good to see that they put at least this one in a DARK bottle!
