Draught at the brewpub. Brown colour with a lighter tint, creamy off-white head. Sweet aroma with toast, caramel, also hints of nuts. Taste is sweet. Light to medium body, creamy texture and an average carbonation. Finshes short and sweet with brown sugar, caramel and toasted malts. I had this one after the superb Martins Bräu Pils, and it tasted more watery, despite the style, higher abv. and bigger body. Still a decent dunkel. kiwianer (3428) - Otorohanga, NEW ZEALAND - FEB 22, 2013
The head is robust, the body brown and clear. It smells bitter, a bit sweet, malty, ok. It tastes a bit bitter, darkmalty, malty. Not bad but a bit boring. 11/9/8/9/-/9 MartinT (9880) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - JUN 29, 2011
My Bottom Line : fiulijn (20491) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - JUN 9, 2011
Subtle caramel and toast adorn this velvety Dunkel, an entirely malty profile which quickly veers into watery territory in the second half of each sip.
Further Personal Perceptions :
-A sturdy head of foam laces beautifully atop the stunning reddish-brown. Superb visuals on this one. A superb appearance for a rather forgettable brew.
-Cherries are suggested in the nose. Or is that my piece of Schwarzwalder Kirschtorte coming from the other end of the dining room?
-I would prefer more malt flavors in my Dunkel. Many are suggested, but they remain distant. This flavor profile definitely lacks depth. At least it’s very clean, not like some buttery Dunkels that tend to pop up here and there in lieu of authentic caramel malt flavors.
-Hops are pretty much a no-show.
-That is one silent finish…

Draught at the brauhausfonefan (49293) - VestJylland, DENMARK - NOV 6, 2010
Beautiful dark amber color; creamy, beige head. Light aroma of roasted malt, simple. The flavor is better supported by some good malt and caramel, then some roasted malt; the mouthfeel is overall quite dry, with more roasted malt in the end; the bitterness is well pronounced. Quite good, but nothing special.

Draught @ Erste Freiburger Gasthausbrauerei Martins Brau, Kaiser Josephstr. 237, Freiburg, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany 79098.
Unclear medium brown amber color with a average to large, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, roasted, nutty, caramel. Flavor is moderate to light light heavy sweet and moderate bitter with a average to long duration, licorice notes. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.
Tap @ Martins Brau (as Export Dunkel). Slight hazy light brown color, short frothy off-white head. Aroma of some toffee and caramel. Bit sweet taste, caramel. Bit dry finish. Ok. Fin (10536) - Merton, Oxfordshire, England, Oxfordshire, ENGLAND - JUN 20, 2010
Had this on tap at the Brewpub in Freiburg, Germany, 13-06-10 Pours murky brown with an off-white head. This is a bit fruity in the mouth but soft and big malty flavour’s show through. A very slight sourness at the edges and a steak of fruitiness coming through, not great but also not bad. A6 A4 F6 P3 Ov13 3.2 rubbishystuff (2538) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - JUN 20, 2010
UPDATED: JAN 20, 2015 Had at Martins Bräu in Freiburg. Nice beer for a lovely town. Biggest complaint was that it was a bit watery. It did look a like a glass of cola. Serving: Tap asheft (3082) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - JAN 21, 2009
[on tap at brewpub]
Nutty aroma with some apple sort of like a brown ale with German hops--citrusy and floral. Almost clear brown with a lasting, beige top. Sweet and nutty flavour with some apple and brown sugar. Perfect balance of sweet and bitter. Subtle citrusy hops as well as biscuits in the flavour. Medium body, medium carbonation, nutty finish. theacelatrain (262) - Washington DC, USA - JUL 4, 2005
On tap at the brewery. Dark cola brown witih a tan, fizzy head. Mostly malty flavor, but had enough hops for balance. Mouthfeel was good, not as carbonated as head indicated, but taste was a little watery.
