UPDATED: JUN 21, 2014 On-site pitchers 2012, growlers2013, 5L minikeg2014. Yes, I do love this typical SW unfiltered Pilsner a whole lot more than its lazy tourist trap origin... Reasons: pours murkier than a Zwickl, like a green straw protein shake. Fresh aroma, citrus, proteins and some Tettnang. Taste is a paean to zesty Tettnang and unfiltered rich pale malts, gong down on a richly smooth palate. Sweet and suave almond pale malt notes throughout. Extra points for remaining under 5%, and with that one of the SouthWest’s prime sessioners, with quite some natural hop character.
- note to Freiburg visitors: always up to get this as draught growler or come join in the MON pitcher fun at the source... YogiBeera (2569) - New Jersey, USA - JAN 5, 2006
Thanks Christian for dragging this with all the french cheese and paté all the way up to Hamburg - must have been a hell of a smell in the train compartment and great picture! Huge big crown head. Golden color, fizzy carbonation. Very fesh nose, like fresh mashed grain. Pleasant greain taste with medium citrusy that lasts long. Great session beer! [growler from brewpub]
Spicy, oxidized candy aroma with a touch of sulfur and some caramel. Faint notes of citrus and banana. Hazy dark gold with a bubbly white lacy cover. Slightly sulfury, fresh flavour that is nice and dry with some lotus root malt and a crisp bitterness. The sulfur and maybe a little diacetyl sort of makes this beer a little popcorny, but in a good way. Light to medium body, crisp and clean finish. My Bottom Line :
Koelschtrinker (21318) - K?ln (Cologne), GERMANY - OCT 12, 2013
Talkative pils malt flavors engage herbal, spicy hops in a refreshing conversation from aroma to finish for a refreshing pint of unfiltered Pilsener.
Further Personal Perceptions :
-A veil of foam laces around the cloudy whitish yellow (this looks like a Witbier!).
-I love the fact that this is the lightest beer of the bunch abv-wise, but it is the most flavorful. Good job!
-The prickly carbonation remains soft when hitting the palate.
-Citrusy flavors rise from the spicy hops.
On tap at the brewpub.
Leicht hopfiger, sehr herber und leicht bitterer Antrunk. Frisch, die Bitterkeit steigt leicht, das Bier schmeckt frisch und angenehm getreidig, zum Ende auch hefig. Bitterer Nachhall. Sehr gut, wenn auch ungewohnt nordisch. 11/12/11/12//12 pivo (2687) - GERMANY - JAN 1, 2006
A pils with lots of personality. First of all, the head is just the fluffiest, foamiest white head I’ve ever seen. Almost comical, but inviting nonetheless. Pale gold color and a lively carbonation. Citrus flavors in a thin, quick malt that gives way to a broad, stinging hop bitter. Kinda like a lemon peel - dry and bitter. This is fairly aggressively hopped for a German pils. The balance if off, and there is a even a little sulfury-ness in the taste, but it’s fun and full of character. Thanks Christian! haukur (2075) - Kópavogur, ICELAND - JUN 7, 2003
nice Pils from a microbrewer in Freiburg (not to be confused with the Martinsbrau of Marktheidenfeld)
. Nice yeasty aroma and all around a nice pils. I preffer the dunkel though... fiulijn (21022) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - JUN 9, 2011
Draught at the brauhausbrnandersen (4068) - Copenhagen, DENMARK - JUL 28, 2013
Cloudy blond color; creamy head. Mild malt and hop aroma, some noble hops appears. The malt profile is mild, but the combination of light crispness, extreme dryness and high bitterness creates a very refreshing impact; long final, although the hop doesn’t carry many aromatic qualities. Good.
Draught at the brewpub. Hazy, golden colour with a darker tint. Frothy, white head. Light fruity aroma with a citrus note - quite unusual for a German pilsener - then grass, pale malts and herbal, floral hops. Taste is bitter. Light to medium body with a thinner texture and a lively carbonation, almost fizzy - which adds to the freshness and crispness of this pilsener. Finishes bitter and dry with citrus and hay. Very refreshing, that just hit the spot this warm summer evening in Freiburg.
