Very unusual Belgian that I really enjoyed..................................

This is the original Courage brewery's Bulldog Pale Ale which was imported into Belgium by John Martin. The hop bells add a delicate darjeeling tea flavour. Fairly restrained yet bursting with sweet flavours this is a very special pale ale. Now brewed only in Belgium exclusively by the John Martin family it has been re-named as John Martin's Original Ale. It's ironic that it's only in Belgium that some of Britain's finest ales can be experienced!

Bottle from Carrefour, Eupen - marked as 5.8 % ABV. Pours copper with medium head. Sweet hoppy aroma. Goes down easily with a pleasant bitterness. Good.

*** bottle was 2 years past expiration date *** Pours a clear amber beer, beige creamy head. Smells like caramel, pear and banana, most likely due to it’s age. A pleasant mouth feeling, still enough carbon. Tastes fresh and little sour at first, continues to a sweet malty taste with caramel. Aftertaste is a little sweet, roasted malts and some acidity, again: maybe due to it’s age.

Clear copper colour, white head. Aroma rather restrained, but very nice. Floral and citrus hops on a malt base. Quite sweet, quite pronounced honey and some caramel. Flavour is malty, nice bitter hops tones, citrus fruits, honey. Very balanced. Finish bit bitter with citrus tones.
(Draught @ Café Jos, Nijmegen)

Gedronken uit fles. Mooie kleur bier, maar kleine schuimkraag, of schuimkraag moeilijk te verkrijgen. Lekker van smaak, licht zuur, fris, sprankelend.

[I believe this is the beer I've had even though the label only called it Martin's Pale Ale, the label was different than the one depicted, and the alcohol content was only 5.8% ABV. But as far as I remember it was made by John Martin.] The aroma is sweet with powerful notes of hops. The color is amber and it has a beutiful though collapsing head. The flavor is fantastic; sweet, malty with notes of caramel and ending on a good bitter note. A really lovely beer.
