Bottle. Poured black with lasting beige head. Light aroma of tea and roast. Malty backbone, surrounded by maté. Maté finish with more barley malt. An interesting beer. Reid (2536) - Salem, Oregon, USA - DEC 18, 2010
22oz bottle from "Habits" in S.Salem. $3.99
Appearance? Nice black, cant see through it, colour and a small frothy tan head. OK
Pleasant lager type aromas with a hint of something fruity/spicy in the back, some tastiness also.
Taste is similar to the aroma..slightly toasty malts, then a deep fruity undertaste giving way to notes of tea. Not bad at all.
Ok on the palat, not thick but to style..only draw back is a lingering metalic after taste, but its not that horrible.
Overall a nice "take" on the style. Strykzone (7355) - Wood River, Illinois, USA - DEC 10, 2010
22 oz. bottle from Hayduke. Black indeed! Only a bit of red is visible and a rocky tan head sits on top. A malty aroma that is a bit roasted, chocolaty, and peaty. The flavor is funky peat and a bit sour. drjay44 (3707) - Salida, Colorado, USA - NOV 20, 2010
650 ml. bottle. Pours a thick, gradually collapsing, beige head over a reddish black (SRM 35) body.....nose is light coffee, chocolate, bit of hop spice, ginger.....taste is light coffee, chocolate, bit of bread, finishing with a light hop bite, Mate is minimal....mouth feel is relatively light, carbonation medium low. This meets the style fairly well. It does not have quite enough spice tones, but does taste good. BJCP 6/3/13/4/6 grimreaperguru (263) - santee, California, USA - SEP 11, 2010
Pours a black color with a nice creamy tan head. The aroma was a light but very nice coffee sent. The flavor though did not live up to the appearance or the aroma. It was a bland sweet, coffee taste. The body was thin with next to no aftertaste.Overall it was lacking.

Bottle from Sac Bevmo. Pours very black with a nice tan head and a chocolate aroma. There is a thin chocolate flavor with a dry bitter finish. Tastes like a schwarzbier, but not a good one. dwyerpg (6180) - Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - AUG 14, 2010
Doesn’t smell too good. A bit metallic. The look is the best part of this beer. Flavor isn’t nearly as thick as most black lagers. A bit of sweetness. Really, this is the worst of the 3 mateveza beers. Weak and a bit too caffeinated and sweet, having a bad finish. Aquilo (651) - Berkeley, California, USA - AUG 12, 2010
Black with a thin tan head. Aroma is caramel, but mostly some sour funk. Flavor is slightly bitter, but mostly just watery. I would rate this lower, but I don’t think that it’s bad. Just disappointing. BrewDad (5328) - Olympia, Washington, USA - AUG 12, 2010

Black in color thick looking and filled with tons of dark malt and coffee like aroma. The flavor was thick roasty malts – Caramel, coffee where very dominate. This was an interesting beer.
Head is initially average sized, frothy, brown, mostly lasting.
Body is dark brown to black (non-opaque).
Aroma is moderately malty (roasted grain), with notes of tree bark, sage/thyme, licorice, sassafras.
Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly bitter.
Finish is lightly sweet, moderately bitter.
Light to medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation.
While the aroma isn’t unpleasant, it’s a bit medicinal and not very beer-like. The yerba mate characters would have been nice enough as accenting notes, but not so much as dominant ones. Quite watery in the mouth, but the flavor balance is reasonable. Not something I’d buy again, but ok.
