COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
India Pale Ale was developed in Burton, England, as a "Super-Premium" hoppy pale ale around 1800. The extra strength in alcohol and hops helped preserve the beer on its long export journeys to India and beyond. The style developed a following worldwide. Its flavor begins with a smooth, malty creaminess followed with a big burst of dry-hop flavor from English Kent Golding Hops. It then finishes with a lingering yet pleasant bitterness.

Big Swell IPA is a fresh handcrafted India Pale Ale brewed with huge amounts of American hops and malted barley...dry hopped to perfection!

Perhaps Maui has consistency issues? The six pack I bought is not good. The taste has some malt sweetness and plenty of piney hops, but a weird vegetable or cigarette smoke taste dominates. Very dry. Not good.

On tap at EurHop #4, Rome-Italy. Deep golden quite clear color, little foam leaving drafts as it lowers. Nose: balanced semi sweet citric, truly fruity (apples mostly). Mouth: semi sweet start, middle clean watery with a sparkling bitter finish. Nice. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Piney hop aroma with some tropical floral hops. Taste is a slight sweet carmelized malty with a piney hop finish and some floral hops. Malt balances the hops nicely and it is not too resinous. Has a bit of yeasty finish that makes it a bit dirty, but still overall a nice IPA. Note: says canned 11-11-15 and I had it 10-6-16, would think this would be a bit better fresh for sure. The dirty yeasty may be due to age?---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Drank from a pint glass, a really nice traditional English IPA, nice malt base with nice earthy hops, usually not a big fan of dry hopping with EKGs.

2015 BJCP Category: 21A American IPA

AROMA: Mostly orange citrus; slight pine; perhaps some green tea. Low clean malt presence - not sweet, though. No alcohol. 9/12

APPEARANCE: Burnished copper/rusty orange hue. Very hazy body. Large, off-white soapy foam. Moderately high retention and lacing. 2/3

FLAVOR: Amber malt base, though flavor is more clean than sweet. Bitterness is moderate with hop flavors of pine and orange. Finishes with a smoke flavor - seems to be a rauchbier IPA though theres no indication of this on the can or brewerys website. Could be tannins, sulfur, phenols, and/or very piney/resiny hops. Interesting palette. 14/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium body; smooth texture. Med-low CO2. Seems a tad flat. Hops linger but are not astringent. 3/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: An IPA with smoke character is interesting, but Im not sure if that flavor is intentional. Otherwise, a rather typical, no-frills IPA. 7/10

TOTAL SCORE: 36/50
