India Pale Ale was developed in Burton, England, as a "Super-Premium" hoppy pale ale around 1800. The extra strength in alcohol and hops helped preserve the beer on its long export journeys to India and beyond. The style developed a following worldwide. Its flavor begins with a smooth, malty creaminess followed with a big burst of dry-hop flavor from English Kent Golding Hops. It then finishes with a lingering yet pleasant bitterness.

Big Swell IPA is a fresh handcrafted India Pale Ale brewed with huge amounts of American hops and malted barley...dry hopped to perfection!

Can courtesy of jdubFL. Pours deep gold with copper hues and thin white head. The aroma is mild feebly pushing up notes of citrus, some pine and other faint vague hoppy notes. The taste is sweet with malts and a modest level of citrus and pine hops in the background. By about midway spicy hops, citrus hop flavor and a touch of pine heads running off into the finish with a sweet citrus cotton candy sense taking it into the after taste.

Can. Nicely fragrant and fruity hop aroma. Good rich caramel malt flavor with great hops. Hops work well overall, flavor, aroma, and bitterness. Good balance. A well-done IPA.

A nice amount of hops balanced nicely with a small hit of malt. Well done considering how hard it must be to get the hops right.

Pours hazy golden, white head. Nice classic USIPA aromas, grapefruit and pine.
The flavour lacks a little bitterness, coming off slightly sweet. This may be due to the age of the can. The hop flavour is bang on. A solid, well made US IPA.

Smells grassy with lemon-lime and sugar. Flavor of sourdough, cardboard and aspirin tell me that this beer may not be at its peak freshness, at least I hope this is not what they are going for. Pretty light overall for and IPA in body and flavor. The hop profile is especially muted in the taste of this. Not bad at all, just not great for the style. Thanks Maui. 2010 12oz. can.

Can from Kona wine. Pour is clear light copper with a pretty large white head. Aroma is wonderful with large amounts of citrus and pine hop dominating. Also a nice light caramel malt aroma lingering in the background. Really smells good. Flavor is a bit maltier than expected with sweet malt leading the way. Hops are certainly present, but they take a backseat. This can is about 6-7 weeks old. I would love to try a really fresh one b/c the aroma leads me to believe tis could be really great beer.

A- Body is a bright, vibrant amber color that has minimal fogginess. Pours with a nice approximately 1 finger slightly off-white head. Head eventually fades to a thick collar and some lacing can be seen down the glass. S- This has a nice crisp, hoppy nose. Piny hops dominate but there are some citrus hops in the background. T- Good, classic, West Coast IPA flavor. Lots of hop flavors upfront that are mostly citrus and pine with a slight sweet malty background. The finish is all refreshing piny hop flavor and no bitterness lingers. Pretty clean all the way through. P- Light body with medium carbonation. Body is a bit lighter than most IPAs but not thin in any way and offers some hop oils. O- This is one awesome IPA. Its not the biggest, or the hoppiest, or the most complex, but it sure is one of the most enjoyable. Great classic West Coast IPA with nothing crazy going on. Big flavorful IPA. Not sure if its exactly my cup o tea, but the Big Swell has plenty of hops and an overall unique taste. Definitely worth a try.

Can. No glass available to pour, but you can instantly smell hops. The flavor is very good, very bitter with hints of citrus and floral notes. Lasting bitter finish. This is my first IPA in a can and I admitedly thought I would be dissapointed. I was wrong. It is very freshing and a decent IPA. I am not a big fan of English Kent Golding hops, but I still enjoyed this beer.
