The lager is named after the legendary lava rock formation on Ka’anapali Beach which Hawaiians believe is one of three uhane lele, a place where souls of the dead leap from earth into their ancestral spirit land and where only a person with great spiritual strength can enter that world and return.

The Black Rock Lager embodies its name by beginning with crisp yet shallow bitterness and slightly smooth and roasted malt flavors before rising to a heavenly floral and spicy finish. Guests can enjoy this deceptively dark yet rewardingly refreshing craft beer while watching history come to life as the Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa reenacts the legendary Cliff Dive Ceremony every evening at sunset.

Roasty malt aroma. Deep brown color. Head lasts near an hour. Full lace. Very delicious local brew when in Maui. Tastes like a medium brown ale. I’m digging it warchin’ the sunset on Ka’an application beach in front of the Westin.

Draft. Pours a moderate, light beige head, with minimal lacing, over a clear, dark brown (SRM 25) body.....nose is roasted malts, with cocoa, chocolate, light coffee, slight hop soice, balance to the malts.......taste is mildly sweet with heavy roasted malts, with cocoa, chocolate, hints of coffee, mild hop spice, finishing with moderate hop bitterness, and slight roasted bitterness, balanced......mouth feel, light body, no alcohol, moderate carbonation. This meets the Schwartzbier style quite nicely. It is clean, light and refreshing. Rating here to style, above to enjoyment. BJCP 8/3/16/4/8

Draft at the brewpub. Near black in colour with medium carbonation. Aromas are of toasted nuts, light pale malt with a bit of caramel and cocoa powder as well. More cocoa on the palate as well, backed by notes of light roast coffee and minerals. Light bodied and clean finishing. Very nice overall.

Ernest (7862) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - JAN 22, 2016
Draft at Maui Brewing in Kihei.
Head is initially average sized, frothy, off-white to light brown, mostly diminishing.
Body is dark brown to black.
Aroma is moderately malty (cocoa powder, roasted grain, coffee), lightly hoppy (herbs), with notes of minerals and chalk.
Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly bitter.
Finish is lightly sweet, lightly to moderately bitter.
Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation.
Could stand a bit more bitterness but it’s a decent enough rendition. Nice mineral content. MBC brews are certainly better on tap at the source than in cans; still not quite high 3s quality, but solid and drinkable, some enjoyable.

Dark in color, as expected. Taste more like a coffee porter than a lager. Maybe not as heavy as a porter.

Tap at Capitol Beer in Sacramento, CA. Pours really dark brown with orange glints and a light tan head. Aroma of light fruits and dark malts. Med body, or so. Flavor: tastes like a schwarzbier. It’s lightly sweetly malty, has a chocolate hint, notes of light fruit, and light, light noble hop. Finishes a bit earthy. I am pleasantly surprised.

marcus (10752) - Sacramento, California, USA - MAY 12, 2015
On tap at Capitol Beer & Tap Room. Pours very black with a nice tan head and a light toasty aroma. There is a smooth roasted malt flavor with a moderately bitter finish. Fresh and clean.

patricks110 (2715) - Alberta, CANADA - MAR 29, 2015
Very enjoyable brew. Pours a dark muddy brown with a tan head atop. The aroma is malty with light roasted toffee and molasses malts, light hops are almost not present. A creamy malt base with a dry finish. Nice bready and molasses malt flavours that gives a good body to the brew. Overall, a good sessionable dark brew.
