COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our Scotch Ale begins with a smooth, alcoholic warmth and malty sweetness created by a prolonged two hour boil which promotes moderate kettle caramelization. Maris Otter base malt is accompanied by low amounts of Roasted Barley, Crystal, and Smoked Malts to provide a depth of malt flavor. Northern Brewer hops are added during the boil to balance, but not overpower, the malt sweetness.

From notes, had at Obriens for SDBW. Pours copperish brown with a small off white head that recedes quickly. Nose is caramel, molasses, booze and dark fruit. Taste is well balanced sweet and bitter. Rich. Mouthfeel is crisp and sticky, body is heavy and the finish is long.

Draft at PP Carlsbad. Pours a clear reddish color, with a caramel colored head. Flavors of sweet malt, caramel, light fruit, and some hops in the finish. Better than average scotch ale, but I don’t usually like this style.

On draught at Bailey’s. Sweet malty flavor. Sweeter than a typical Scotch ale. A surprise from Hawaii.

Starts off with a malty and sweet, almost rumcake-like aroma. Reddish brown. Strong, sweet and malty. Caramel and toast aftertaste, with some alcohol burn. Did I mention it was sweet and malty?

On tap at the brewpub. Too hoppy for a scotch ale. Pours a pretty orange, but this is quite a bizarre example of the style -- seems like the recipe is quite a bit off. Tasty besides that fact.

Pours a reddish brown. Malty aroma with a big of sweetness to it. Some stone fruit taste in the back.

UPDATED: JUL 24, 2012
Location: Draft at the Brewpub, 7/6/12

Aroma: The nose is roasted malts, caramel malts, and nutty notes
Appearance: It pours a dark reddish color, clear, with minimal head and no lace
Flavor: The taste is mid-sweet, much like the nose component wise, with minimal bitterness
Palate: The body is fairly clean, with a smooth feel, and soft carbonation
Overall Impression: This scotch was another solid draft offering from Maui. I didn’t get much of the booze or heat, just a nice sweet malty flavor.

Probably better than most Scottish versions I have had. Smooth, a touch flinty and oliy, with some judicious berry flavours complementing the chocolate and rich amber toffee. Ever so slighty smokey - like a thin plume wafting overhead. Went down very quickly and a little too easily for a beer of this ABV!

On tap at the brewery. Pretty good scotch ale, one of the best I’ve had. Very smooth, alcohol isn’t noticable, and the Carmel malt is great.

I had this on tap at the brewpub in Ka’anapali. It had a nice malty sweetness and was easy drinking.
