Cask at The Reginald Mitchell, Hanley (JDW) A deep brown colour with a frothy tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, milk chocolate, some nuts and subtle dark fruits. Taste of roasted malts, nuts, some dark fruits, slight earth, a little chocolate and subtle coffee. Medium bodied and soft carbonation. A lightly roasted, fruity bitterness in the finish. A decent balance but nothing’s standing out. Your regular stout flavours, jut nothing exciting.

Cask HP at The Crosse Keys Bishopsgate as ’Mauldons Black Adder’, no abv stated. This is an old classic, so pleased to catch up with it - and only just came on so in perfect nick. Black with a red hue, foamy brown head. Aroma is dark chocolate, plum jam, roast, quite fruity. Body is fairly light, smooth with tingly carbonation for cask. Taste is milky chocolate, plum, earthy, light metallics, roast. Very drinkable with an interesting character. I can see why it was so highly regarded back in the day. Good but nothing too special by today’s standards.

Draft at Reading Beer Festival. Roasty and slightly sweet. A nice light dark beer (if that makes any sense).
