Despite the ban on women in the Union Army, Elizabeth Newcomb fought in the Civil War. Bill, as she was known, dressed as a man and saw combat in several battles. We have named our India Pale Ale after Elizabeth because its looks are deceiving. Although light in color, it is fully hopped with a bold, bitter taste. This beer is not for the rookie ale drinkers, and certainly would have been a favorite of Elizabeth’s.

brewpub in kc. Nice malt flavor, underplayed behind a wonderful hop presence. Nice aroma, but it’s the heavy hop bitterness that gets all the attention in the beer. It definitely has that fresh, ’craft-brewed’ flavor. Drinking one of these made me want another so i bought a growler.

Sampler at the brewpub. It was a fine IPA, the best beer they make on a regular basis (half of them suck balls)> Has a lighly sticky lacing and a clear orange/copper color. Aroma is lightly fruity hops that are sweet and perfume-y/ Taste is similar with just a bit of residual sweetness.and a low bitterness.

On tap at the Foundry in KC. Pours a clear copper body with a finger-width, creamy, white head that dissipates slowly and remains pretty lacy. Not bad looking. The aroma is minimal, but what there is has a sharp hop bitterness and a bit of sweet maltiness. The flavor on the other hand is noticeable, however, not necessarily in a good way. There is a pronounced, harsh hop bitterness that dominates this beer. Very earthy and piney. Not a lot of maltiness to this making it pretty unbalanced. Palate is dry, harsh, and light. Overall, despite the nice abundance of hops, there is no balance! However, for a local brewpup, it was better than I expected and made for a somewhat enjoyable sipper.

Pours a deep copper. Nice hoppy nose. Nice hop malt balance and very consistent.

STL Microfest. Pours copper with a light white head. The aroma has dry caramel malt, earthy hops and diacetyl. Medium body with nice carbonation for the style, but it has a definite watery feel. The flavor starts off with earthy hops, harshness, diacetyl and a dirtiness to the hops and malt. The finish is all dirty hops (probably chinook). Fair at best.

On tap at the brewpub. Filtered, dark copper color, small thick head. Nice dry hopped nose. A bit cold. Bitter, but not overwhelmingly so. Nice hop profile and solid body. Full flavor going down. A solid IPA.

Surprisingly good IPA. Strong hops. A good local brewpub beer that had a nice bitter finish.

This beer is lightly hazy and deep amber in color. It is topped by half an inch of white foam, providing good head retention and spotty lacing. A mildly hoppy aroma is no big deal. The first couple of sips left me somewhat unimpressed. Decent enough but no big deal. Then about half way through the glass, a really nice spicy hop character came out (perhaps as the beer warmed?). The hops were fresh, tangy, and spicy, with hints of citrus. Although it wasn’t an exceptionally bitter beer at 45 IBUs, the malt was mainly for balance. I suppose you could call it lightly toasted and on the dry side, but again, mainly for balance and providing a medium body. This beer is moderately carbonated, with a long clean citrus aftertaste.

heemer77 (5358) - Urbandale, Iowa, USA - DEC 27, 2006
On tap at the brewpub. The body was medium gold with a chunky and slightly off white head. The aroma was grapefruit with some light bread. The taste had some unbalanced grapefruit rind with almonds. There was also some burnt bread crust. This was another lifeless beer at the brewpub. This needs some more malt body.

theisti (4157) - Kansas, USA - DEC 5, 2006
On tap at brewpub (KC). Nice IPA, bright hoppy aroma and initial taste. Malt is present in the body, and there are more hops in the clean / dry finish.
