First tasted this at the Glasgow Winter Beer Festival in February 1997. Cask, gravity dispense. Ruby black in colour with a thin off white head. Sweet toffee notes in the powerful malty aroma. Creamy but thin mouthfeel and poor lacing. Dark malts give a moist maltloaf base with sweet juicy damsons, sultanas and prunes mixed with treacle toffee notes. There is a slight prickle of earthy hops in the aftertaste but this is short lived. Robust powerful malt returns with booming notes of dry oak cask and vinous fruit. A superb, strong Old Ale in style and highly recommended.

500ml bottle. Pours a dark amber with a pillowy head. I really cant fault the appearance; the head sticks around and spins a web of lace as the glass empties. Wow... a huge malty aroma that I cant quite get on with. Smooth caramel taste that is particularly sweet. Lands somewhere between a bitter and a barley wine without ever quite making sense. Still, worth a try.

Deep red colour. Strong fruity aroma. Very rich and silky texture. Flavour is sweet like the juice of dark red fruits. The finish is altogether much drier though giving a nice balance.

Scopey (14203) - Croydon, Greater London, ENGLAND - NOV 25, 2011
Bottle from Sainsburys Purley Way. It pours deep mahogany brown, with a bubbly beige head. The nose is varnish, chocolate, wood and dark fruit. The taste is wood, resin, varnish, fruit cake, raisin, medicinal, chocolate and warming alcohol, with a long bitter-dry finish. Full body, fine-moderate carbonation and foamy mouth-feel. Surprisingly good stuff!
