Helles is the German word for ‘light’ as in light colour, and this golden coloured beer is typified by a refreshing piney, citrus hop aroma sitting atop a predominantly light malt accented palate.
The hop aromas and delicate malt flavours work together in perfect balance to produce a refreshing beer with a clean, crisp finish. The Hallertaur hop does all its work on the nose, meaning this is a beer with very low bitterness. An ideal companion to roast pork, light seafood pasta, goats cheese salad, or an apricot tatin.

Superbeer (1) - Buckinghamshire, ENGLAND - DEC 18, 2012 does not count
My favourite British pale lager. Very easy to drink. Lively carbonation with great hoppy palate (Hallertau, I suppose).

BlackHaddock (7951) - Shropshire, ENGLAND - APR 9, 2012
Half pint in the Greenwich Union, Meantime Breweries tap house: Light golden body, bright, clear and clean looking: a typical Helles/Pils/Lager in fact, even down to the thin white head that didn’t hang around for long. Standard aroma of not much (from Helles/Pils/Lager): suggestions of floral hops and shortbread biscuits if I’m being kind. Again nothing to push it above other Helles, light tasting blend of bland ingredients that give a mild hop/malt flavour which didn’t excite or interest me a great deal. Carbonisation as you’d expect, giving it a pop/fizzy zing to it: maybe if it had been drank in a sunny beer garden in Munich instead of cold pub just outside London it might have faired better in the scoring, but I doubt it!

No noticeable scent. The taste is fresh and dry with a touch of malt and grassy hops. Reminiscent of a pilsner.

HenrikSoegaard (14704) - Randers, DENMARK - MAR 20, 2012
Draught. Creamy white good mostly lasting head. Yellow colour. Light malty and hoppy aroma. Light bitter flavor. Average light bitter finish. Watery palate.

saxo (19569) - Højbjerg, Aarhus, DENMARK - MAR 15, 2012
Tap @ The Market Porter. Nice head with good duration. Color is golden. Aroma and taste are straw, grass, bread, grain, malt and hops.

Don’t know about close to water but this is pretty close to urine in my mind - unpleasant from start to finish ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bullit (4790) - Buffalo, New York, USA - AUG 24, 2011
Keg @ Brewdog Glasgow. Slightly hazy golden colour, white head. Nose is grassy, hay, bit dry. Flavour is dry, grassy, fairly bitter. Fairly dry finish.

JohnRMurdoch (5142) - Glasgow, SCOTLAND - AUG 23, 2011
Keg @ BrewDog Glasgow. "grainy brewery" aroma. Bright clear golden yellow colour. Grainy flavour. Sharp with sour aftertaste. A big tasting lager but it is not very nice.

Benjii (3050) - Edinburgh, SCOTLAND - AUG 14, 2011
On keg at The BrewDog Bar. Pours a light blonde colour with a lacy white head. Aroma and flavours of yeast, caramel and barley. Foamy mouth-feel. Good but not great.

KyotoLefty (10808) - Kyoto, JAPAN - AUG 9, 2011
Draught at Greenwich Union. Malty, cereal nose with light grassy hops. Deep golden color with a fine head. Grainy, meaty bread in the mouth, not sweet. Dry, with good grassy hops and a touch of cardboard that takes away from it. Simple but clean and good.
