Helles is the German word for ‘light’ as in light colour, and this golden coloured beer is typified by a refreshing piney, citrus hop aroma sitting atop a predominantly light malt accented palate.
The hop aromas and delicate malt flavours work together in perfect balance to produce a refreshing beer with a clean, crisp finish. The Hallertaur hop does all its work on the nose, meaning this is a beer with very low bitterness. An ideal companion to roast pork, light seafood pasta, goats cheese salad, or an apricot tatin.

RoyceH (1200) - Hesperange, LUXEMBOURG - AUG 13, 2007
Cask, Market Porter. Clear yellow with thin white head. Citrus hop, some malt. Quite fruity and "cloudy" smell. Mouth is quite carbonated, sweet malt and some grain. Lasts grainy and nondescript.

jbrus (4988) - Delft, NETHERLANDS - AUG 12, 2007
[email protected] Veggies and grainy aroma. Pale yellow, white head, few lace. Sweet, malty, grainy, hint of pineapple. Where are the hops?

Christian (13927) - Odense, DENMARK - AUG 7, 2007
Golden with a small but lasting white head. Malt, grass and grain in the nose. Dry and grain-y flavour.

Ungstrup (38906) - Citizen of the universe, DENMARK - MAY 3, 2007
Draft. A yellow beer with a disappearing white head. The aroma is sweet malty with a crisp hop character. The flavor is sweet with a crisp malt character, leading to a dry bitter end.

reakt (951) - Greater London, ENGLAND - APR 19, 2007
UPDATED: SEP 1, 2007 Draught @ The Market Porter, Southwark. Clear pale yellow with a quickly fading white head. Hop, wheat and citrus nose. Bitter hoppy, wheaty pils like taste. Has fine carbonation but is thin underneath with a bitter finish. Not what I expected at all.

larsniclas (7284) - Billdal, SWEDEN - JAN 27, 2007
Draught at The Market Porter, London Bridge. Golden with a white head. Rather grassy and dry aroma. Sweetish and fruity and way too thin to be really good.

MesandSim (7117) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - SEP 14, 2006
A Sim Rate (on tap at The White Horse): Very subtle aroma. Vanilla and a tinge of hops. Appearance is poor and made me expect little of the flavour, but it’s actually really tasty! Similar flavour to match the aroma, but more pronounced in its notes. Creamy, sinkable, nice surprise of an ale!

omhper (25948) - Tyresö, SWEDEN - AUG 9, 2006
[Draught at White Horse, London] Clear golden, no head. Sweetish and fruity, clean and fizzy. No hops, no bitterness, the body isn’t firm enoug by far. More commercial lager than helles, I’m afraid.

Svesse (8932) - Hässelby, SWEDEN - AUG 8, 2006
(Draught at Market Porter, Borough, London, 23 July). Colour is golden yellow, almost no head, too much carbonation (When will they learn how to pour a lager with a good head in England?). Nose is malty with a floral hoppy aroma. Taste is malty and bready with a light but distinct flowery hoppiness in the finish. Better than most English lagers, but still some way to go to reach the best Germans.

bluevegie (3073) - Perth, AUSTRALIA - JUL 5, 2006
Tap @ Greenwich Union Pub. Golden body with an average head. Piney citrus hops and fairly light in body. Good for a cleansing ale and not a lot more.
