Meantime Brew Master, Alastair Hook, has spent 20 years planning the quintessential English lager. His reasoning is simple. The great European lager brewers use very soft water and neutral yeasts to ensure that only the flavours of their locally grown malt and hops come to the fore. East Anglia is home to the worlds finest malting barley and Kent is home to some of the worlds best hops. Midway between the two, London is ideally placed to bring them together in a straightforward, clean, long-matured, unpasteurised lager, where all you can taste is malt and hop.

33cl [email protected] on the Thames in plastic [email protected] 7 degrees Pours golden yellow with quickly residing white head. Somewhat stale smell of bread and wheat. Bready flavour as well with very faint hops and a taste suggesting the use of maize or rice - especially in the aftertaste. Medium to low carbonation, unfresh and slightly heavy without being decidedly off. A disappointment.

Bottle at Marriott Hotel Grosvenor Square. Golden body with bubbly texture. Nose is eggy, hoppy and malty, Taste is also malts, some hops and eggs. Creamy, prickly texture. Enjoyable.

Pint at Five Tuns in Heathrow terminal 5. Clear, yellow and VERY lively. Smells a bit metallic. Taste is pretty much that of a normal lager. Nothing to particularly mark it down on or to especially recommend it. After five hours quietly spent sweating buckets and then throwing a burger down my neck, however, it hit the spot.

A pale golden yellow coloured beer with a frothy white head. A light malty aroma, there is a hint of hop in the background. Dry mouthfeel. A clean zesty hop taste to start, is followed by a dry biscuity malt flavour, light nuttiness and a hint of caramel. A really good example of the style. Bottle from Tesco, Kings Lynn.

330ml Flasche. Goldgelbe Farbe, wenig Schaum. In der Nase Hopfen und Hafer. Geschmack leider zu flach. Fr ein Lager in seiner Kategorie aber nicht schlecht.

330ml Bottle from Tesco, Gilsgate, Durham. Crisp-looking, golden pour with a quickly diminishing, white head and less carbonation than expected. It smells like a standard, dull pale lager, slightly acidic, with eggy off-notes and CO2. The flavour is slightly bready and slightly plasticy, with little to no hop character. I expected better.

Normal colour for a lager, small head, little lacing. Strong grainy aroma, harsh malty taste, very dry hoppy finish. Easy to drink but very dry. Okay but bot great
