COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
330ml bottles and Keg. Formerly known as Meantime Vienna. Also includes Cascade hops as well as those mentioned below.
100 years ago Pilseners, Müncheners and Viennese lagers formed a trio of major lager styles brewed in central Europe. Gradually the lighter Pilseners swept all before them and Vienna style beers fell into an undeserved decline.
Traditional Bavarian Perle and Spalter hops and delicately coloured malts produce a deep copper coloured beer with a firm fruity caramel aroma, a smooth complex malt character and a long crisp clean finish. This beer is slow fermented and cold-matured over long periods to ensure perfect balance and gentle natural carbonation. Union goes with bread and wheat based foods such as pizza and pasta or more mid-weight dishes like duck or noodle stir-fry.

UPDATED: AUG 16, 2003 Another offering from Meantime, the adventurous but not always successful microbrewery in Greenwich. The Union of the title refers to a 'fusion of lager and dark beer made from two-row barley malt and Cascade hops.' Or, in other words, an attempt on a pre-Pilsner dark lager, the rare Vienna-style that is perhaps best exemplified by Mexico's Negra Modelo. The result is a stale beer aroma with a hint of sour fruit, then a mouthful of thin homebrew with a rancid Tate & Lyle mucus. This is a terrible beer. It is an insult to put it in a bottle and expect people to pay for and drink it. I'm all for breweries experimenting, and for British brewers to reach for the complexity of some of the continental beers, but failures should be fed to the pigs and not released to the public. If Union was one of the ten green bottles on the wall it should be the first to fall. Picket any shop selling this abomination and demand something interesting - demand chocolate mice, softer loo paper, and good looking students to pack your shopping - but do not put this vile object in your shopping trolley unless you are a masochist.
Re-rate. Union bar, Greenwich. Fly's friend Doug says that the kolsch has more flavour than this. bob says it is a perfect beer for someone who doesn't want a lager and doesn't want an ale. Nice ruby colour. This time round it tastes like an Alt, but without the long bitter finish. Hummm.

Bottle from Vinmonopolet in Valkendorfsgate, Bergen. First rating from Meantime coming up; this is a brewery that seems to be "craft-oriented" but is listed as "commercial brewery" here on RB so I’m kinda curious to make my own opinion about the level of craft represented. :-) Pours a deep, near-brown orange body with a small white head. Aroma is extremely faint, with only a few malty tones barely making it into my nostrils. Taste is slightly better; roasted malts, hints of caramel and toffee. Still weak. All in all a pleasant but mediocre vienna-style lager. Oh well, for this one my expectations were rather low.

Tap in the Market porter. Aroma is veinna malts, pale and toffee, herbal peppery character. Taste is simila,r but a bit too malty and boiring to be great.

Tap@Brew Wharf, Borough, London. Quite decent. Served a bit too cold. Nice nutty caramel, slightly toasty flavours come through as it warms, touches of berry fruit. Slightly stale, dead mouthfeel, otherwise OK.

Easy drinking deep amber beer the colour of an aged whisky. Gentle carbonation with no head whatsoever. Sweet smelling with a slight hint of soap, this does not follow through into the flavour. Contrary to the description above, this beer does contain cascade hops, though there is very little bitterness, just a slight pepperiness in the finish. Predominant flavours are a light caramel with some bready undertones. Very light and understated complemented well by a light cheese such as gouda.

UPDATED: SEP 28, 2006 On draught at the brewpub in Borough. Clear, chestnut brown with a small, but stable off-white head. Very hoppy nose with notes of citrus. Flavours start with caramel sweetness, but is balanced by citrussy hoppiness, ending quite dry. Rather soft. Another highly enjoyable beer from this microbrewery. Rerated Sep 2006: On draught at Brew Wharf as Meantime Union. Sweet caramel flavours with some nuttiness. Less impressed. (4-3-6-3-10)
