COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
330ml bottles and Keg. Formerly known as Meantime Vienna. Also includes Cascade hops as well as those mentioned below.
100 years ago Pilseners, Müncheners and Viennese lagers formed a trio of major lager styles brewed in central Europe. Gradually the lighter Pilseners swept all before them and Vienna style beers fell into an undeserved decline.
Traditional Bavarian Perle and Spalter hops and delicately coloured malts produce a deep copper coloured beer with a firm fruity caramel aroma, a smooth complex malt character and a long crisp clean finish. This beer is slow fermented and cold-matured over long periods to ensure perfect balance and gentle natural carbonation. Union goes with bread and wheat based foods such as pizza and pasta or more mid-weight dishes like duck or noodle stir-fry.

Bottle. Found this in the back of the fridge tonight, and it had been there for a while. I can’t remember exactly when I got it, but the best before date was in Dec/10, so probably early last year. Thankfully, it was still in good shape. Nice nutty-copper colour with a small off-white head. Mild aroma of light caramel, a bit of toasted bread, and a herbal hint. Medium bodied. Flavour starts sweet and malty, with caramel/toffee and toasted nuts, a bit of bread crust as well, leading to a dry and moderately hopped finish. I suspect that the hops might’ve been a bit brighter when it was fresh, but it still held together nicely. Just a simple, straightforward and enjoyable beer.

Tap @ Greenwich Union Pub. Has a little bit of red body in this drop but more tawny brown. Malt characters in the taste that last but little else. Ok.

Copper clear, thin head. Smells of hay, malts and burned. Taste is medium malty, some sweetness, dry feel. Good bitter finish. Just a little boring that’s all

Embrouille (2853) - SWITZERLAND - DEC 3, 2010
Bottled 33cl. Purchased in Drinks of the World in Zürich. It pours a clear amber beer with a smallish decently lacing head. Raisin, diacetyl, DMS and some caramel underneath in the nose. I can hardly find any Cascade reminiscence in the taste. I don’t like the malt profile. Nutty. Buttery finish which is surprisingly short. I am not a big fan of the style.

Complex Vienna style lager. Have to be honest that this style is not one I’ve generally been keen on. Colour is an inviting copper light brown. Aroma is toasty malt. Taste is sweet malt and grassy hops and finish has nuttiness to it. A flavoursome lager but probably not to everyone’s taste.

Cask, Sheffield tap. Hazy deep mahogany. Sweet caramel aroma. Malt forward with some cherry and sugar.

Ethereal (2421) - Los Angeles, California, USA - JUL 26, 2010
330ml bottle at the Greenwich Union, 24th July 2010. Russet colour with a fast vanishing white head. Light, with the weight of a lager, but malty and fruity on the tongue. Some hints of red fruits on the nose. Dry finish with even a hint of tobacco. Goes down surprisingly well.

Draught, at the Greenwich Union, London.
Amber, nectar coloured body with a fine, almost creamy head, that faded away before really appreciating it. Good malty notes on the nose. Well round flavour, that covers all the bases. Good, medium and well balance palate. Despite SilkT's comments this was the best on the day for me (a different session mind).

Half pint poured at the Greenwich Union in Greenwich (London), a clear dark amber with a light tan bubby head. Too cold to note any aromas, maybe some light caramal. Chocolately flavours abound, combining with a hoppy bitterness, followed by a clean finish. Nice.
