Take an India Pale Ale and feed it steroids, ergo the term Double IPA. Although open to the same interpretation as its sister styles, you should expect something robust, malty, alcoholic and with a hop profile that might rip your tongue out. The Imperial usage comes from Russian Imperial stout, a style of strong stout originally brewed in England for the Russian Imperial Court of the late 1700s; though Double IPA is often the preferred name. You can thank west coast American brewers for this somewhat reactionary style. "Thanks!"

UPDATED: FEB 9, 2018 The Bayou at SLC. Pretty smooth tasting imperial IPA. A little on the piney side vs citrus. Smooth.

UPDATED: FEB 16, 2018 From a can into a Denver Rare Beer Tasting stem glass. Pours light gold with large head and lace. Aroma at first can be a bit scary like old melon rinds and laundry, but after opening up you get the fresh hops, malts and grains. Significant carbonation and mouthfeel. Flavors of bright malts, candy sugar, smooth grains, some alcohol but not too hot, flowery hops, minerals, subtle toothpaste, a citrus zest bite & love drops. Overall smooth, creamy, hoppy in a happy way, and absolutely delicious...undeniably a hop bomb but some creamy and tasty...what did they add to this formula? Must be something illegal!! lol! One of the best IPAs or hop centric brews out there... Damn! ... more please.

Takeout freebie from 134 Bar, Nuneaton, February 2017. Now I understand why in certain offices at Apple's HQ in CA a can of this is considered as everyday an essential as a double-bagged mug of Tetley's. Gauzy blonde with a slick lacing mousse. Wonderfully stewed fresh leafy hop aroma with more than a hint of passing jazz cigarette; suggestions of Darjeeling, slushy papaya, guava, tinned peach, overripe melon right on the turn, spearmint. That's a 9. Fresh and heady with the merest hint of heat; all about the humming tropical hop, Fruit Salad chew, dry resinous pine, grapefruit and Jelly Tots. Jellied peach and mint leaf, hint of chaff to finish. Humming fresh hop unimpeded by soggy malt. Top drawer.

12oz can. Pours a clear light gold with a moderate white head. Aroma is resiny pine, pineapple, passion fruit, grapefruit, bread, light earth, and floral hops. Taste is pine, melon, grapefruit, caramel, light bread, and some herbalness. Initially sweet but finishes with a moderate bitterness. Some alcohol to the finish. Medium body. Medium carbonation. Sticky, slightly creamy mouthfeel. Well balanced but the taste's elements feel like they're at odds with each other (especially the melon), at times. Lots of lupulin powder?

Gold with white head. Juicy dank IPA dry piney hop aroma and flavor fantastic.

rjplumer (1264) - Foxboro, Massachusetts, USA - JAN 10, 2018
The aroma is a pleasant pine with a citrus background. The body is a burned copper with faint haziness. It has bold start but is followed by sweet citrusy resiny malt. It is both sweet and dank with hoppy resin. Warming with a clean finish.

alobar (3993) - Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA - JAN 7, 2018
Pours straw yellow with minimal white head. Aroma of citrus and pine with citrus, pine, and some bread flavor. Good beer!

From a can. Grabbed a four pack of this on the recommendation of country store owner while picking up some Heady Topper in Waitsfield VT. Am I glad he did. A wonderful west coast style IPA. Great balance provided by the mosaic hops ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
