Take an India Pale Ale and feed it steroids, ergo the term Double IPA. Although open to the same interpretation as its sister styles, you should expect something robust, malty, alcoholic and with a hop profile that might rip your tongue out. The Imperial usage comes from Russian Imperial stout, a style of strong stout originally brewed in England for the Russian Imperial Court of the late 1700s; though Double IPA is often the preferred name. You can thank west coast American brewers for this somewhat reactionary style. "Thanks!"

Can thanks to Brian! Pours hazy golden, large creamy off white head, dissipates slowly, nice lacing. Aroma of tropical juice, pine, mango, melon. Flavor is light plus sweet, light plus bitter, juicy. Medium body, creamy mouthfeel. Quite good.

On tap at Hamiltons Tavern, San Diego. (my first beer from Wyoming) Golden with a small white head. Fresh and hoppy with tropical fruit, pine, light malt and some caramel. The body was medium as was the bitterness. A nice one.

Type: 12-oz. can Glass: Clear 14.75-oz. porter/stout tulip From: ucsbmullet on Beer Advocate Price: $3.16 (educated guess) Purchased: N/A; Received Jan. 24, 2017 Consumed: Feb. 1, 2017 Reviewed as: American Double / Imperial IPA Misc.: No COD (estimating in Dec. 2016); Can read 9 pct. ABV Thanks, Nick! Was lucky enough to get a bunch of awesome brews from Nick. Not sure Ive had a bad Melvin beer (or even anything less than outstanding), so Im sure this one is going to be fantastic. Poured a medium-to-straw gold yellow clear color with three fingers of rocky white head. Lots of light bubble streams coming up from the bottom of the glass. World-class foamy uneven lacing. World-class retention. (Sight - 4.50) Smelled a healthy dose of dry Mosaic up front. Also papaya, guava, floral, dish soap, resin, pine, lime and lemon. (Smell - 4.25) Taste was even better. First thought that there was no way I was 9 pct. ABV. Got that dry Mosaic up front, followed by papaya, dish soap, guava, floral, dry mango, dank resin, pine and lime. (Taste - 4.50) Medium body. Creamy texture. Average carbonation. Dry, Mosaic finish. (Feel - 4.00) This was really good. Maybe not quite as good as I expected, but Melvin has spoiled me. (Overall - 4.25) 4.34 96 A

If you want a full flavor double IPA with no regrets this is your beer. Its a bit aggressive with the hops which I like. Nice pillowy orange pop sickle flavors quite well rounded. Nice!

Can thanks to Sholl. Pours a super clear orange gold, white head. Aroma is pine, caramel malt, bread, cracker malt, grass, light booze. Flavor is caramel malts, pine, stale citrus, booze. Big fairly traditional west coast IPA, fairly malt forward.

Can shared by Peter, pours a clear orange gold with white head. Notes are Boozy and ashy with some oranges, heat, and cigarette pine. Couldnt finish this one, so thin and insanely boozed out yo. Can we stop with the 9+ percenters, not everyone is an alcoholic and some people want to taste the hops that go into these brews.
