A - Pours a copper brown with a light tan head that sinks into a thin cap of micro bubbles.
S - Heavily roasted toffee, sorghum, brown bread, a mix of dark fruit, raisins, prunes, coffee grinds, alcohol, heavy minerals.
T - Scorched brown sugar, molasses, fusel alcohol, prune juice, some bitter hops, rough mineral finish.
M - Medium body, slick, boozy.
The burnt sugar mixed with hot alcohol creates an unpleasant astringency. This is a miss for me.

Ok, I’ll say it, Imperial BarleyWine? Marketing, whatever! Light umber color with a diminished head of light tan bubbles. Light fruit and toasted to pale malt aromas. Some bit of caramel as well. Lightly sweet in the front. Just hints of pale malt and vanilla. Dries out slightly and has a bit of dry malt and toasted nuts. A little bit spritzy in feel. Nothing over the top or imperial, but a straight forward barleywine, that would do well next any fire in the fall or winter. 4/10

Clear dark amber, small offwhite head.

Pours a deep amber with no head......aroma of plum, raisin......taste is plum, raisin with a chewy middle and fairly clean finish with a booze finish.

Pours a cloudy, reddish amber with a thin but creamy tan head. The head has limited retention.
Aroma: spicy hops over a floral base of alcohol esters and sweet malt.
Taste: high ABV all too evident in the flavor and mouthfeel. Looking past the alcohol, the underlying flavor is a good and rich fruity/herbal mix of malts and hops. Unfortunately, this is overshadowed by alcohol. Good sweet/bitter balance.
M: medium body; as expected, warming in mouth and GI tract, but this one has some burn to it.
O - a decent, and low-priced example of the style. Improves with warming. Can’t quite decide between a beer and a brandy? ... perhaps this is for you. Too boozy for me. CloakedDagger (2971) - - JUL 8, 2015
Bottle 35,5 cl. Pours an almost clear dark amber with a dense and lacing beige head with good retention. Lovely nutty, caramellish aroma - biscuity - your typical US Barley Wine. Rich, malty body - tons of caramel with just enough bittering hops to avoid anything getting cloying. Some warming late alcohol. Pours a deep reddish copper color with a slightly dirty beige head that dissipates slowly to a ring on top. The smell is quite sweet, it reminds me more of an old ale than an American barley wine. Caramel, toffee, prunes, dates, cherries, slight bit of resin and a hint of alcohol in there. There’s an almost non existent hop aroma, maybe its an English barleywine? Taste is sweet and fruity. Caramel covered cherries mixed in some toffee, but add a bit of a hop bite. Lingering sweetness in the finish with a little bit of alcohol heat. Sweet almost syrupy mouthfeel, light level of carbonation and a relatively thick body. As an old ale or English barleywine I really enjoyed this, as an American barleywine it misses the mark. Nice sipper, great flavors and aroma, I might have to check out some more brews from Mendocino.

Aroma of sugary molasses, toasted raisins, brown sugar, toffee, and caramel funk. Brown appearance with a crimson tint. Taste is off balance sugary caramel, brown sugar, intense toffee, maple and faint booze on the finish. Overall, not my favorite. It’s got some pretty funky off malty flavor. C rating.
