A clear dark bbrown stout with a light moka head. A good mil chocolate or moka coffee aroma. In mouth, a lighter stout, with nice chocolate malt, but again, very thin, which seems the recurring theme at this place. Light bitterness lingers on. On tap at brewery, July 28 2007. j12601 (13027) - Poughkeepsie, New York, USA - NOV 27, 2009
On tap at the Merchant Ale House. Pours a deep dark brown to black with a medium sized tan head. Sweet oatmeal notes, roast, hints of coffee and char. Really good roast and coffee flavors, nice creamy full body. Finishes with a touch of sweetness and a long roast char flavor. Quite tasty. Sammy (12600) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - AUG 28, 2008
On-tap at the brewpub. Pours black with virtually nadda head. Slight aroma of roast. Taste is initially watery and thin roasted coffee. I builds up and is drinkable, so I can see why it is so popular. Introduction for bud/molson drinkers to a stout. A weak stout really, but passable.

Black body, small khaki head. Aroma of mocha and cold coffee, muted dark chocolate. Flavoure is the same, with more prominent coffee bitterness, mold roast over muted bitter chocolate. Average palate is thin for a stout. Grows on me as I move through the glass. Decent. JoeMcPhee (9515) - Toronto, ON, Ontario, CANADA - APR 27, 2012
Deep black pour with a thin off-white head. The aroma is quite roasty. A touch of light molasses and some dark fruit. A bit of light cocoa and a little bit of roast. Soft palate and decently balanced. A bit of dustiness as well. Some soft toast and cocoa as well.

[1542-20080719] Tap. Aroma is a bit smoky but mostly malt. Dark brown red-hued body with a long-lasting creamy light brown head. Smoky malt flavour has a hint of coffee chocolate nuts and bandaid. Medium-full body. NOT very monkey-like, sadly.

.. . .almost as bad as the Skylon Tower’s 3D movie...
UPDATED: JAN 26, 2006 Draught. At Merchant Ale House, shared with jerc and GregClow. Poured opaque black-brown with reddish highlights, very thin light brown head. Aroma was roast - roast coffee beans, sourish roast chestnuts, with baker’s chocolate, tart prune and a touch of candyish malt. Taste - this is a *dry* stout alright, all the above roast notes are here in spades, a hint of smokiness, quite bitter, decent linger, became more complex as it warmed up - all the beers at the Merchant were served much too cold IMO - and my only real complaint about the brew itself is that it was a little watery. Take your time with it and it’s not too bad - not a great Oatmeal stout, but drinkable. CapFlu (5129) - Victoria, British Columbia, CANADA - JUN 19, 2003
(Draught) All these beers have a watery taste to them. The Dunken Monkey did have a sweet malt and cocoa nose though. Opaque with light brown head. Watery cocoa flavour. Smooth. Bland. GregClow (3402) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - JAN 1, 2006
Draught at the Merchant Ale House. Dark brown with ruby flashes. Aroma is very nice, with a good roasty character and a bit of smoke. Body is thinner than I like in a stout. Flavour is quite roasty as well, with some mild caramel and bitter chocolate. Quite a dry finish, surprising from an oatmeal stout, but not bad. All in all, it’s a fairly middle of the road stout, but it was definately the highlight of the Merchant line-up for me.
