I was surprised to find this little gem in Ontario. It is quite a big stout with a rich, silky mouth feel, aroma of chocolate and roasted malts. Working it's way towards St-Ambroise in style. Definitely a great find. BierMonger (22) - Ontario, CANADA - DEC 22, 2009
Aroma of espresso, roasted malts.
Black with beige coloured head. Medium head retention. Not much lace.
Tastes good, flavors of espresso, roasted malt. Not really much hops, but some bitterness is there to balance.
Full bodied. Carbonation is average, but would prefer a bit less.
One of the best stouts in the province, anyone with an appreciation for the style should try it.

On tap at Merchant Ale House. Pours dark with foamy head. Hints of chocolate and some smokiness that i didn’t expect. JoeMcPhee (9426) - Toronto, ON, Ontario, CANADA - APR 27, 2012
Deep black pour with a thin off-white head. The aroma is quite roasty. A touch of light molasses and some dark fruit. A bit of light cocoa and a little bit of roast. Soft palate and decently balanced. A bit of dustiness as well. Some soft toast and cocoa as well.

On tap at the brewpub. Black pour, thick white head, looks great. Sweet roast aroma. Good sweet taste, medium bodied. Packed full of flavour, short finish. A very solid stout. My second favourite beer here next to the IPA. j12601 (10868) - Poughkeepsie, New York, USA - NOV 27, 2009
On tap at the Merchant Ale House. Pours a deep dark brown to black with a medium sized tan head. Sweet oatmeal notes, roast, hints of coffee and char. Really good roast and coffee flavors, nice creamy full body. Finishes with a touch of sweetness and a long roast char flavor. Quite tasty. daboskabouter (1470) - Fergus, Ontario, CANADA - FEB 25, 2003
Dark brown with a slight head. Smokey and roasted notes in the nose along with some burnt/charred wood notes. The body is lightly roasted with a slight bitterness towards the end. I thought this was more of a dry stout, but either way it lacked defenition and comes across a little thin, also lacking in a certain blackness inherent in most good stouts. jercraigs (10303) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - AUG 16, 2005
Black body, small khaki head. Aroma of mocha and cold coffee, muted dark chocolate. Flavoure is the same, with more prominent coffee bitterness, mold roast over muted bitter chocolate. Average palate is thin for a stout. Grows on me as I move through the glass. Decent. GregClow (3402) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - JAN 1, 2006
Draught at the Merchant Ale House. Dark brown with ruby flashes. Aroma is very nice, with a good roasty character and a bit of smoke. Body is thinner than I like in a stout. Flavour is quite roasty as well, with some mild caramel and bitter chocolate. Quite a dry finish, surprising from an oatmeal stout, but not bad. All in all, it’s a fairly middle of the road stout, but it was definately the highlight of the Merchant line-up for me.
