4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: JAN 1, 2017 I think I like this better than some german Kölsches I have had. For it’s style I felt it was quite flavorful. Serving:Bottle
Bottle undated. Pale straw with some haze. Quick, noisy white foam leaves a wispy fringe. Reserved, and almost airy, nose of crackers, beeswax, lemon and flowers, with mild apple, makeup powder, DMS and sulfur underneath. Prickling effervescence. Pronounced pils malt unfolds alongside a slick fruitiness and elegant kiss of floral hops. Quite dry, with a very brittle pils malt and dried hay aspect atop a crunchy beeswax edges. A negligible tartness is exacerbated by a limp and slippery apple-like twang and some vegetables. Quite well extracted and clean pils malt displaces some of the slick residue, and ripe nectary hops notes come forth to offset the delicate tartness as the beer warms. Toasty hay dust and fresh baguette abound. Scratch of characterful sulfur echoes an artfully incorporated zing of hops, as lemony shades loom beneath. Very nice balance. Simple and slick, but dry and nicely toasty, finish is comprised of scratchy sulfur and peppery bitterness preceding an unwelcome lingering starchiness. A decent version, albeit a tad apple-y, slick and starchy. It does have a nice pils malt character married with obviously German nobles, and the fermentation is mostly clean as with most of the lagers from this brewery. But given this style’s inherent limitations, I’d like to see them retire this and replace it with a nice helles with Hallertau...although, the brewer does seem to struggle with golden lagers and pils malt (the pils had significant DMS issues, among other things), so perhaps they should stick to dark lagers. Draft. Crystal clear yellow color, white head with spiderweb lacing. Aroma of citrus and black pepper. Taste is lightly bitter citrus, subtle pine, clean finish. Decent. Scipio (1085) - Palatine, Illinois, USA - JUN 8, 2017
Pours a clear, thin, yellow with a full white head that dissipates quickly. The aroma is weak. From what I can gather, its floral, with wheat and bread. Happily, things get more exciting upon sipping. There is a fair amount of bitterness here. Crisp and clean, its grassy and slightly floral. Cereal, wheat, a slight lemon, and a bit of honey. Very short cereal aftertaste. This is light to medium in body, with a smooth texture, and average in carbonation. Kind of refreshing actually. Its nothing out of this world, but it will do the trick. Tap at Pour House. Brilliantly clear light yellow color. White foamy head. Fairly light aroma. Low biscuit malt, no hops, low citrus esters. Flavor is moderate-low biscuit malt, dry spicy hops-low. Fair bitterness through the finish. Green apple flavor on the finish. Crisp.

12 ounce bottle from Woodmans in Rockford, IL, sampled at around cellar temp from a Zywiec glass. Huge fluffy large-bubbled gout of foam tops the very pale gold bubbling body, decaying slowly...fresh noble hop nose, with dry straw and new-mown hay, clover and lovely lightly honey’d malts....oh my this is good stuff when it hits the tongue, initially fairly sweet but the sugar fades rapidly and is replaced by a good solid bready, doughy body with some real heft, though it maintains a very light sweet character throughout...finish is moderately dry, long, and with some light herbal hoppy notes....body full, carbonation moderate. Really good stuff; I think these guys are giving some of the better Wisconsin brewers a run for their money on the German styles. edgallow (4211) - nashville, Tennessee, USA - JUL 15, 2016

A bit on the heavier side for the style. The flavor is good and easy. A simple beer on a hot day in Chicago. raoul_duke (240) - - MAY 30, 2016
