A vigorous pour into my teku glass produces a fat, dense, three-finger thick, darkly browned head; the head leaves spotty lacing on the sides of the glass as it slowly subsides. The beer is simply opaque and black. The aroma smells rich, concentrated and burnt; roasted molasses, coffee liquor, charred wood, burnt whole grain toast, sweet brown sugar notes, burnt marshmallows, roasted raisin notes, and burnt prunes.Zymurgeist2 (2272) - Redwood City, California, USA - JAN 19, 2014
The beer is bitter and roasted up front, but not nearly as sweet as I was expecting, though it still has lots of sweetness. The beer has a lingering bitterness in the finish, a lot of which is from a lingering burnt grain character; the bitterness is actually fairly light for the balance of this beer. Lingering roasted prune notes adds a fruity edge, and there is a bit of blackened raisin as well. There is some spicy, perhaps slightly earthy, maybe even herbal character here, as well as a whole grain, toasted straw like character to the finish. Dark, rich coffee liquor (though not overly sweet), concentrated dark chocolate, and richly burnt molasses / brown sugar notes add a decadent character to this beer without being cloying.
A tasty beer, but doesn’t really set itself apart from many another Imperial Stout; still this isnicely balancedand I like that it is not overly bitter, and the roast character nicely balances and is balanced by the dark malt sweetness.

22oz bottle. Pours thick, syrupy, black with a dark brown head. Roasted malt, coffee, dark chocolate, sweet. The alcohol is very well hidden.

22 oz. bottle. Pours black with a beautiful rich dark brown head. Just about the darkest head I’ve come across on a beer. Very pleasant aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, coffee and rye grain. On tap at Apex, last day of their stout festival. Dark viscous brown with a mocha head. Dark chocolate, roasted malts, smooth but bitter, hints of coffee. Bottled. Nose of brown sugar, molasses, some smoke. Sweet and sugary flavor, roasted. Soft, smooth, and full. A bit too sugary, but good.
