4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Black body with lasting tan sheen. Big pit fruit, dark chocolate, tobacco, vanilla, wood aromas. Rich smooth mouthfeel. Flavors follow the smell with dark chocolate, pit fruits, vanilla, wood, deep roast malts--warming finish--nice IRS/Barleywine/whatever brew
Draft nitro at brewery, dark brown beer, big brown head. Aroma is dried fruit, molasses, brown sugar. Taste is plums and chocolate, coffee, brown sugar, molasses, soy sauce. Palate is smooth and rich. The dark backbone on this goes with the barley wine sweet, might be my favorite barley wine. thirdeye11 (6162) - Dallas, Texas, USA - MAY 18, 2014
(Draught - surprised by the lowish ratings) near black, ring of fine medium tan bubbles. Nose of rich chocolate, bourbon, barrel, molasses, caramel. Taste of tobacco, rich chocolate, semi sweet, bourbon, burnt caramel and cane sugar, tobacco and bourbon linger. Great beer. maxwelldeux (4433) - Snohomish, Washington, USA - MAY 7, 2014
Draught. Pours a very cloudy brown color with a small white head on it. Nose is malt-forward, with a lot of caramel and bread, and seems slightly sweet. Taste is moderately sweet, with caramel and a lot of grains to it. Feels a little heavy. Bulk_Carrier (6065) - Vermont, USA - JAN 2, 2014
UPDATED: FEB 24, 2014 Growler share NYE’s fun; It pours pitch black colored body, pours like motor oil, nice little half finger head that dies and doesn’t leave any lacing; the aroma is roasty yet vinous, some coffee-like flavoring speckles into that roastiness; the flavor is roasty vinous (bitter yet sweet, but not bittersweet), anyways, roasty wine-like aftertaste, dry bitter yet roasty finish; its a sipper and not exactly easy at all on the palate but still adds a nice smooth quality; overall; a black barleywine - whoah! cool idea, I like it, I’d have this again pantanap (3367) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - JUN 11, 2013
On tap at the source... Pours like a stout, deeper and black, homogenous, and topped with a darker than khaki head that reduces down to solid ring... Aroma of anise again, yeast, chocolate with a pale green hop aspect but somewhat lacking overall. Slight boozy essence... Boozy dark fruits and roast to pair alongside a mild citrus hop backing. More resembling a hoppy stout in nature with a full body although the toffee and dark fruits come into play moreso after warming. Big and strengthy. More barleywine-esque than what the aroma suggests. Not bad but lacks a little focus methinks.

Draft: Poured a black with light brown head. Aroma is strong fruit and malts with loads of alcohol. Nice dark fruit, light licorice, malts, an alcohol burn. thorongil2 (3423) - , Ontario, CANADA - JAN 27, 2013
(tap) clear very dark brown colour with a small brown head; aromas of vanilla, dried fruit; rich, balanced flavour with a long light bitter finish Gription79 (2892) - Bountiful, Utah, USA - JAN 26, 2013
My God this is great. Had on draft at the brewery. Creamy, oily, coconut, bourbon, vanilla, slight alcohol fruitiness. Very nice. The 13% is well hidden, no heat.
